headset shopping

Folks,

It may have gotten lost in the real-estate noise of the other thread, so I wanted to re-post looking for advice.

Does anyone know of a place in the DFW or PHX area (going to be in PHX 10/31-11/3) that has a selection of headsets I could try on for comfort before I drop a few hundred on one?

Is it neccesary to have one prior to beginning your training or will they let you borrow one for a bit? I say this because then you would have a chance to talk to, and even borrow, some others' sets and try them out. I have worn everything from a Bose to a basic DC. Bose are the best, but way to pricey for me. For now, I just converted my old AF DC and bought some new super soft ear and head gels. I actually don't like the ANR because I like to hear the motor well.

Good point - I don't think it's absolutely necessary to start, so I'll talk to my CFI (when I have one) about that. As I think of it, the club may get some discounts with the FBO, too, so I'll look into that.

About the ANR - for about the last five years I was riding motorcycles, I started wearing earplugs under the helmet. I found I was about "hear" the motor just as well, just had to learn to hear it differently - it was more feel than anything else, but the plugs didn't detract from that. I'm guessing (don't know yet) that ANR will have the same effect - I'll still be able to feel the motor, y'know?

But, I guess I'll figure that out as I go. I'm so freakin' excited about starting right now my head is spinning...

I am happy for ya big dog! After spending a year not flying to save my pennies, I know how great it feels to finally get going!

Lemmie know what you buy and I'll paint the earcups for ya.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Heh. I thought about doing that m'self. Maybe later. I've never been a fan of the DC green in any case, but if it's comfy and works, some mods might be in order.

Well, I'm on a budget here and not doing the loan thing, so I'm trying to get a lot of bang for the buck, which is why I am going the flying club route.

In fact, I'm filling out my paperwork for the club right now...

There are two places that I know of in Phoenix area- one is the Pilot shop off of scottsdale road in tempe. They have the bose, a few DC, i think a few Avcomms and some Peltors.

The other place i know of is in the scottsdale airport in the business center next to the FBO- they carry mostly DC's and I think a few Softcomms.

*edit* could be a little confusing at SDL because they are doing construction on the parking lot but its not too bad. The people on the scottsdale pilot shop are really nice though.

hope that helps!
