Headset recommendation - Saab

Well, I'll say that with bose at the very least, when the batteries die, the speakers are still usable. With the zulus, you're in Charlie Brown land when the batteries die. Somewhat dangerous if you ask me. Why I still have my zulus is beyond me.

Between the two, I think you only get one choice of two connectors. "Normal"(phone/mic) and panel powered. I'm not 100% on this though. I'm sure some crazy nerd has figured out some kind of adapter. God bless the nerds!

You sure about that? My Zulus only lost ANR when the batteries went out. They still functioned as a headset, and the PNR was not to terrible either.

I didn't know the Zulus did that. I know the qc15s will. Found out the hard way on a PAR appch down to mins in a 210.

If the A20's are good enough for the Avengers, they should work in the Saab.

Sennheiser S1. I've got nothing but good things to say about these things.

Seems a little overkill for those super loud engines on the ship. ;) I've actually been wanting those myself, just can't fork out the 1100 bucks.

I've heard this is technically illegal in some or maybe all operations as the QC15s don't have a TSO number certifying it for aviation use. I could be wrong though, and I doubt anyone but the most dead living person on the planet would try to enforce this. While picking and choosing which regulations to follow is reckless, in this case, I just wouldn't care.
This is a function of your FOM.

Where I work, a TSOd headset is required, only because the FOM says so. This is a changeable requirement.

Actually, it's surprisingly loud inside my ride. There's almost no noise attenuation inside the gondola, and when the engines are running at high RPM, it is quite loud. :)

The best thing about the S1, is that it is the only headset out there that has adaptive ANR. You press a button on the left side of the headset, and the headset will take an ambient sample of current sound conditions, and then adjust the ANR level as appropriate. One of our pilots has the Lightspeed Zulu's, and the S1 completely blows them out of the water in my opinion.

The only negative I can really think of, is that they're not TSO'd, which may be a problem for some users.

Were you trying to get from bfm over to new about a month ago for TPC? I remember hearing a ship bitch about getting something like eight knots over the ground.

We did TPC Sawgrass a few weeks ago (Snoopy 1), but we came from North Carolina to Jacksonville. You may have heard the DirecTV blimp (also our company). I've seen 8 knots groundspeed before; definitely not a fun day. :)

What is blue tooth used for in the headsets?

For audio through the headset from a iPod, iPhone or other bluetooth compatible device, and for phone calls through the headset just like a bluetooth headset.

I used my Zulus bloothtooth often to make a call to ATC and cancel IFR on my way back to KDVT. It was a great being able to make a quick call without having to get my phone out of my pocket.

As you can see when you ask pilots about headsets you get a bunch of different answers. I did not fly the Saab but did fly the ATR. Nothing like sitting next to 15' props all day to make you appreciate a good headset. This was pre Zulus- I used the first generation Lightspeed. My recommendation.
1. Get a good ANR headset.
2. Try different models if possible. Every person's head is different. Some people love the Bose- they give me horrible hot spots. I hate them.
3. Remember to save your receipt and write it off on your taxes.
