Headset, One Ear Open

Hi JC,

So I will be starting my first job flying turbine engines.

I just got notified that my Bose A20 will not be a great headset to use as the jet I will be flying will not have an intercom.

What are the headsets you guys would recommend? I usually like listening to tunes while flying, so if there are any that you guys prefer that allow me to listen to music I would love some recommendations. I have no idea, what I will do without my A20's

Well, if you need one ear open an ANR headset is pretty pointless.

For single sided stuff there's a few choices.

The Telex 850. There's also single versions of the 750 as well.

There's also the Telex 5x5 Pro III. I used this single sided in a Lear 45 for a while. I had a custom ear mold made, so I've never used it with the earpiece it comes with. I also just clipped it to a little plastic piece that was part of the ear mold. That way you don't have to use the head band.

For music add on there are stand alone boxes that you plug your headset into then the plug the box into the intercom. That would be the only way I know of to add music to the above headsets.

Edit: Some thing like this.

This is a Bluetooth version of what I'm talking about. It's definitely expensive but it is wireless. The wired ones I've seen run about a hundred bucks or so.

Edit: I've seen these Plantronics ones for a while, they always seemed interesting.

What are you flying without an intercom?

We have the same problem, I use my clarity aloft with only one ear.

I'd recommend that you turn the music off for the first 200 hours or so.

Don't worry I was not going to... Just nice to have the option to be able to fist pump in the cockpit.

Thanks @Adler and @PositionAndHold for the recommendations. I was looking into the clarity aloft as well. Did you do custom molding? How do you do the custom mold if you did choose that option?

Just the regular earplugs. I can't speak for listening to music though.

No problem. Most audiologist's can make an impression of your ears for you. You just have to know what type of connection the headset uses. The headset company can usually point you in the right direction.

Does your hearing get damaged with the one ear open?

Not sure what airplane he'll be flying, but the 717 doesn't have an intercom, and we certainly don't worry about hearing loss. The cockpit is so quiet that you could practically hear a pin drop. After we get above FL180, most of us take the headsets off completely and just use the speaker and hand mic.

We have no intercoms and it's relatively quite, unless we get dispatched in the 20 series. I use a pair of Halos; they work exceptionally well. I have a pair of Telex for backup.
