Headed to UND

I like beaches and good weather better then cold ass weather and UGLY drab city. Luckily since I left I only have to deal with the cold weather, much more to do around here and it has proven to be much easier to get a job to my suprise

fyi, Daytona is a retirement community... There are parties three times a year, and Riddle is what... 98% male?

...But yeah, Forks freaking sucks... Cant wait to go ditchboarding tho... or para-skiing.

Yeah, I would not personally choose Daytona; I just figured beaches sound more fun then plains, especially with the GI Bill covering it all.

Ditch boarding eh? Do you wait till spring when everything's flooded for that or something?

I far prefer stationary fun like in Duluth, tons of stuff to do here :D

I've only been to Duluth once for a hockey game. What is there to do there that isn't available in Grand Forks?

Major thing would be that hills and lakes add way more to the equation. I mean you have spirit in the winter too, nothing to do in for except for drink in the LONG winter. There is more fun to be had here because of how much nicer the environment is imho

I am guessing the answer will be to whine on forums, oh wait, he used to do that in Grand Forks also....

:rawk:

What exactly am I whining about? I am stating my opinion, have moved on from UND, and am much more happy with where I am now and am trying to give a perspective student, a different take on things then you have.

You all can gang up on me, but when it all comes down to it UND is not the right fit for some people.

I can definitely see where you're coming from. However, I think that the problem lies in the way that you give your opinion. What you're doing is exaggerating and bad-mouthing the things that you don't like. Do you honestly believe that the only form of recreation in Grand Forks is drinking?

Come on, man....

Well, I certainly can elaborate on that. From what I noticed when I was there, that is what people do and usually nothing else. Could have just been the group I was around, who knows.

However, I cannot think of anything I could do in Grand Forks, that I cannot do anywhere else; and usually have it be more fun because everything is flat and drab in No Dak. Being stuck in that landscape and not being able to fly almost brought me to my breaking point; then thankfully I escaped and got my t together. Even so, I have found I can get my ratings for much cheaper somewhere else, so I am happy I did not take out loans.

The big problem is there is environment, some adapt to it better, some don't.

Ah, so, if you see or experience a certain thing, then what you saw or experienced is true for everyone else? If you see alcoholics all the time, then everyone is an alcoholic? If you're afraid of scary movies, then everyone is afraid of scary movies? I highly doubt that this is the only way that you are able to think. Life isn't one big syllogism.

Awesome. I'm glad that you've made a choice that will help to propel you into a better life. Now, the next thing that you should focus on is being a little less subjective.

Q: Why did this environment bring you close to your "breaking point"?

Answer A: It's because I did not like the landscape, and I wasn't flying as much as I would have liked to.

Answer B: It's because Grand Forks is ugly, North Dakota is ugly and drab, everyone drinks all the time, I hate dealing with the "cold-ass" weather, etc.

For the former answer, people would most likely read that, and take what you've had to say into consideration when they make a choice of which school to go to. They're probably not too concerned with what you subjectively think of the city, the state, the environment, and so on. One of the big reasons why people visit the schools that they're thinking about going to is so that they can see and experience the environment and decide for themselves whether or not they think it's ugly or boring or just not for them. I mean, you can always incorporate a little subjectivity, but if that's the only way that you're going to describe your "problems" with UND, then I can see why people would start to get a little frustrated with you.

As for the latter answer, do you want a tissue?

:)

Nah, I'm good and am loving my life finally now that I cut my ties so Ill be fine :laff:

To be honest aside from my hatred of the landscape the administration was inflexible and not open to change which put the final blow on for me.

Your location says St. Paul, but are you really from Socal? Are you sure you're ready for the ND winters and lack of culture and stuff to do in Grand Forks? If you're questioning moving there at all, really think seriously about what you're doing. Otherwise, have fun flying and pay attention in class. :)

I'd probably recommend doing the Avit 102 test course in the summer. You should very easily be able to get the flights done in time for the start of the Fall semester. And the flight (ground school) courses at UND aren't that bad. They can be boring at times, but that's common at any college. Just pay attention and you'll be good to go.

Saying a place has a lack of culture is really just saying that you, yourself, do not like the culture. It's impossible for any group to not have a culture.

Are you guys really complaining about a college town?

Holy cow man, it's a state college with a reasonable guy:girl ratio. Be a little creative!

If I could survive five years in a small retirement village in the middle of Arizona with a college with a 12:1 guy:girl ratio, you can survive GFK.

Really? Reeeeeee leeeeeeeee?

Now if they put that aviation school in the best town on Earth, you probably couldn't afford it and you'd be complaining about the cost and how much more fake/GQ all the competition is for the ladies.

If you could make a profit with a major collegiate aviation program in San Diego, Santa Barbara or Malibu Beach, there'd be one.

In the meantime welcome to Daytona, Grand Forks, Prescott and W. Lafayette.

I still don't understand what everyone has against GFK. I love living here. Again, I have yet to find a "bad side of town". The biggest crimes are usually just frat parties getting busted. Almost everyone is incredibly nice, no matter how little they know you. Yea, the Winters are epic, but I try to look at it as an adventure. I came from Fayetteville, North Carolina, so I didn't really know what snow (or temperatures below 20F) was until I came here. If you can't find anything to do, then you're just not trying. Maybe go to the hockey games in the finest college hockey arena in the world, or watch the football team get slaughtered in the Alerus Center. Catch a movie in one of the two theaters in the area or go bowling at one of the two bowling alleys. Check out Night Life in the Union, where they usually have things like Grocery Bingo or a comedian or a hypnotist. Or just spend the night inside with some friends, play video games or something. You may even wish to...I dunno...study? Since that's what college is for... If all else fails, Fargo is only an hour down the street and Winnipeg is what, an hour and a half north? And as Doug said, this definitely isn't Riddle. We actually have enough girls for every guy, instead of 2 for every 2000.

If you think Grand Forks is a rough town, you've obviously lived a very privileged life. I come from a town where there was usually at least a murder per day (sometimes national news-worthy), the infrastructure can't cope with the overpopulation, hardly anyone gave a crap about each other (except for some of the older southern folk), my high school was overrun with gangs, and thus was set fire to several times, the summers were unbearably miserable (I'll take -40F and 10' of snow over 105F with 100% humidity any day), and every other block was a run-down trailer park or a neighborhood in which if you stopped your car, you would be murdered for being white or black (depending on the neighborhood).

Grand Forks is ugly? Really?

Find me one other town the size of Grand Forks with something like this:

Grand Forks isn't exactly 100% backwater...

Remember when there was talk of moving ERAU-PRC down to the former Williams AFB and the reasoning given?
