Have you ever filed an ASRS/NASA report

I've filled out maybe 6 over 4 years of flying freight. Probably half were something dumb I did, the other half were something dumb someone else did. Never got a call.

I've got a bunch of the return receipts in a box here in my office. They aren't just some get out of jail "free" system. It's a safety system. If I see something that I think "man...that could have been bad", I write one. When submitting online it takes no longer than writing this post.

Amen. I feel exactly the same way. "Get out of jail" is a nice extra, but adding to the data used to find common themes for safety recommendations is the real reason to file.

Yep. That's the reason for the program in the first place.

Agreed...Safety improvement should be the real motivating factor in submitting reports. The "get out of jail free" aspect is a nice bonus, though.

An important thing that many pilots don't understand is that the ASRS filing will only save you from serving a certificate suspension, and only if filed within 10 days of the incident. In other words, if the FAA goes after you for a violation, but you filed an ASRS report, a violation still appears on your record. You just don't have to serve the suspension. Many pilots think that "get out of jail free" means that the violation gets ignored.

Please don't misconstrue this to mean that an ASRS report can trigger a violation...it absolutely can not!

I've filed one, but I can't find it in the database for the life of me.

I filed one last year that got lost. I filed it on-line and it never appeared in the database, and I never received a receipt in the mail. I called them about it, and they sent me a letter in lieu of the receipt. They had the report, and were able to verify the details of the report with me over the phone, but it still hasn't appeared on line. At first I was nervous because I thought it might mean the incident was somehow getting investigated! It was for an altitude deviation resulting from a miscommunicated clearance and readback.

I did. It was for a bird strike. I didn't do anything wrong, a bird just got in my way. I did it anyway because the people at the flying club said it would make sense to do so.

Filed a few. Anything that seems iffy safety-wise, on my part or someone else's, gets a report.
