Has anyone here ever ferried a Cessna 402 from California to Hawaii?

If so... I have some questions regarding the extended range tanks and weight and balance. After some quick calculations it looks like the tanks will put is outside the aft cg limit. I would like to talk to someone who has done this in a 402 to get some insight. We're just starting the process and it would really help us out.

I've you've done it before please email me here or at at johnt1969@gmail.com.

Thanks,
John

wish i could help, sounds like it would be difficult. Maybe try calling a place in HI that has 402's and ask how they did it.

You could get the FAA to sign off on you being aft of CG if you ask em' and its only for this one flight. They approve over gross operations all the time for crossing the other pond. How far aft are we talking here? Dangerously far aft, or just past the edge of the envelope?

Also, make sure that you're going to have enough gas if the winds aren't as desired. BTW, does the thing have an autopilot? You'll probably need it to take a nap if you're going to be flying for more than about 7hrs.

Take me and I'll add 180lbs to your forward CG :)

Re: Has anyone here ever ferried a Cessna 402 from Californi

How does the weight look with the added fuel? Could you put some ballast weight in the nose compartment?

Re: Has anyone here ever ferried a Cessna 402 from Californi

Someone I know put ballast in the front and took off overweight - this was in a B58

Re: Has anyone here ever ferried a Cessna 402 from Californi

I'd much rather depart with some ballast in the AV and be overweight than depart aft of CG in a 402.

I was going to say ask one of the CAir guys on the board. Then I saw one of them already commented.

Also a call to Cessna might be warranted. They might be able to help you.

Are you talking about ferry tanks that you sit on the back seat or tanks that are installed already like an STC? If you're putting in ferry tanks for the flight they need to be plumbed into the AC's fuel system and that will require an inspection and sign off from the feds. You usually apply for the ferry permit at the same time and that will allow you to take off out of CG and/or over gross.
Just call the FSDO, they are usually pretty helpful (out here anyway) about setting you up with the paperwork you'll need.

I did a Chiefton a few years back. This type of flying is not to be taken lightly. The FAA will need to be involed the whole way. They will want a raft and other crash equipment. I would also rent a cold water suit (ie mustang suit) and wear it. As for the over weight aft CG, part of the game. The biggest issue is the lose of engine, after that it is the head winds and the you will not be able to fly with the AP, it won't be able to trim and control the plane in this config. Hand flying until you are in your range and then the AP will be fine. And lastly, bring a few empty larger bottles and a good amount of fresh water. What comes in must come out and then some.
