Hang Gliding

As my graduation present this summer my wife has agreed to buy me hang gliding lessons. By out weekend house is the best hang gliding location in New England and I am quite eager to give this a try. I know most of you of you need an engine and a seat to feel safe, but I am very eager to give this form of flying a try!

Anyone tried it?

I used to have a student who did it. He had a Cherokee 140 and a few gliders. He tried to get me to do it, but I never made the jump. I'm sure it's way cool. Maybe I need to give him a phone call, right after I check to see if my life insurance is paid up.

Id love to do it. I fly gliders and always thought hang gliding would be cool as hell. Its on my to do list.

I'm a member of the USHPA, but have yet to get up in (on? below? with?) one.

Some day soon I hope!

Yep, been there, done that. Even had a T-shirt that said "Remember when hang gliding was dangerous and sex was safe?". It was really cool. The HG pilots were little sperms launching off of a female breast. But, I digress...

I learned to HG in the Bay Area in the late 80's. Eventually became a Hang IV (jokes abound, but that was the rating system back then), which basically meant that you could fly at any sanctioned site in the country. When it's good, you can fly all day. When it's bad, you get a 15 minute sled ride. Every flight ends with a flair, which if timed wrong leads to some sort of damage to either you or a downtube. I've got over 200 hours logged over about 4 years, with one flight being a cross country of 65 miles, terminating at my high school football field. The coolest flight I had was over Telluride, and you really appreciate the altitude when you're setting up at 12,500MSL. Had a bald eagle almost land on my leading edge - really big talons on those guys. He instead tucked in behind me, laughed at how ugly I was, and moved on. Only twice was I truely worried for my life, but things worked out.

Long story short, I started flying VW bugs across the sky and sold the glider in the early 90s. The shirt wore out, too. But, hang gliding is by far the most fun I've ever had in the air.

If i'm not mistaken I swear I read somewhere that hanggliders can be towed aloft by a tow plane like gliders. Is this true?

Yep, usually an ultralight tow plane like a DragonFly.

They also have what's called a Scooter Tow, where they attach a cable to the drive of a scooter and tow you aloft.

I wonder why hang gliding isnt more popular in the United States. I did a search and didnt find that many places that did it. I was thinking it would be a great addition to my soaring club. We got two member who have ultralights at our grass field and I think if the club added a few hang gliders they would get used. I just may have to look more into this.

I did it on the Isle of Wight where it's very popular. Unfortunatly I crashed into a tree and never hang-glided again.

Yeah, I did a ton of that stuff. It is actually how I got started flying. I mostly paraglided but I had a hangglider once upon a time. The crazy part was I learning in Telluride. It was wild!!!

Have you thought about paragliding Ian?
