Handheld Radio

If I'm not there, I will be in Vegas for NJC

Sounds good. I'm still trying to see if I can pull off NJC but October is not looking good for me due to way too many things going on. I'll be sure to get a hold of ya before/if we get back down that way. Cheers.

I don't think anyone has actually ever needed it. GPS in your cellphone is a much better backup.

As Boris said, you can get a perfectly good one for about $50 used. We actually had trouble getting rid of them (icom) for 50 last year.

Yeah, but that GPS isn't going to get a LOC or help you with a VOR approach if needed.

My point being, if your gonna buy one, with as cheap as they are, you might as well spring for one with a full set of features. You did it on your cell phone (one with GPS).

Why do you want one?

God forbid you have the legendary lost com/nav situation it solid IMC from 300' to 30,000' for 3,000 miles then you'd much rather have a handheld GPS to navigate yourself out of a problem than talk your way out of one. I've yet to see one actually work in a plane. I've never understood why a pilot would want one?

If you want to listen atis/awos just use your cell phone.

I also just realized that I will have to buy one of these silly things when I start flying gliders... DOH!

You won't need it if you simply avoid flying the glider oversquare. Really, when will people learn?! :dunno:

If you're going to get one, buy an adapter that allows you to get the antenna off of the radio and stick it to a window with suction cups. They are typically available from places that sell amateur radio equipment. While still not the best solution, it at least gets the antenna somewhat unshielded by the body of the aircraft.
