Does anyone have experience with these units:

Garmin 96C
Lowrance AirMap 600C
Lowrance AirMap 2000C

I'm looking to use this for VFR primary navigation, situational awareness in IFR.

So what do you think of handheld GPS in general, and these units if you've used them?

thanks!

GPS is for GIRLS!!! :sarcasm:

I am actually considering a Handheld GPS myself. I kind of like the AvMap EKP IV and the Lowrance Airmap 2000c. You have to admit though Garmin is a proven winner.

That's my concern. Garmin has a stellar reputation, so even though the Lowrance 600C has a few more features than the Garmin 96C, I'm concerned to go with it. Of course, right now I use a no-map Loran C, so hey, any GPS is better!

I think the G496 is the best handheld GPS on the market.
It should be for darned near $3k. :D

Unfortunately I don't think the company will go for that.....so it's sub $1k.

Back on the Anywhere map, I noticed that depending on how you configure it, you can actually be 100% cordless, via bluetooth GPS and running on internal batteries. That's nice. Might have to look a little more into it now that I see that.

I've used a Garmin 96 quite a bit. Same thing as a 96C except it has a black and white screen. I was actually impressed with the functionality of it. The only GPS I've used more is a panel mount Garmin GNS 430.

If I were you though, I'd try and convince the company to spend a little more and at least get a Garmin 296. It has a lot of the same features as the 396 and 496 minus the weather, airport diagrams, and a few other little things, but the price is more affordable as well, and it's a lot more functional than a 96. I've used a 296, and I loved it. It even has a simulated instrument panel that could be used in the highly unlikely event of a complete system failure in the plane.

I researched it and when I am in the market I want the 600C.

If I was in the market for anything bigger I would be in the market for a house first. :P

Bump....

Anyone else use the 96c or lowrance 600c? Im in the market for a GPS and opinions count. Or what is another GPS in the $700 Range?

I have a 96c and it has been worth every penny. It is often more accurate than the one in the dash. I also like being able to use it for other things like hiking and camping as well. Keeping the charts current is easy and it is really simple to use. Let me know if you have more specific questions.

I dig my Airmap 500 and I've played with the 600C a bit. Seemed like a better, faster version of the 500.

Garmin all the way BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've got the Lowrance airmap 500 as well and I have no complaints. I think it was the cheaper, smaller gps available when I got it a couple years ago... but I really didn't look into Garmin. The 600c looks cool.. but I'm content with my 500 for the amount that I actually use it!

I have used many Garmins and a couple Lowrances. Both work great and IF I were going to buy one, it would be a Lowrance just because they are cheaper. The Garmins do seem to be a little more user friendly. but they both will get you from A-B (with stops along C & D if you want).

I have used the 600C and liked it. It has plenty of features and good build quality. Personally I would go with the 500 though. It lasts longer on the batteries, is cheaper, and gets the job done just as well.

Why does the Lowrance come with a remote antenna? You dont always need to set that thing up do you?
