Had to put my dog down

Ughhh. That is just tough. Sorry to hear. I had my 17 year old Border Collie for 12 years and had to let him go 2 years ago this month. I still cannot bring myself to get another.

So sorry to hear that....................It is the worst feeling in the world it seems as I am at the point myself...I have a cocker spaniel that is ready to go and I new this day would come, 14 years so far, what did i do......I went out and bought a NEWFOUNDLAND...Am I NUTS or just love dogs..:insane:....Like everyone else said, both of you guy's get another dog and you will be surprised how well you will feel, you will see your dog in him or her whatever the breed you choose and will come to enjoy him or her the same, but you will always have a part of your first and the memories.......

PS..go see Marley and Me.............

hey mo, i appreciate what your saying and thanks for thinking of us. i've come to the opinion when it comes to dogs or women you find the best ones when your not looking. we've got a cool rescue, 8 yr. old pit bull that helps. i'm open to a new dog, but i ain't shopping. one of these days i'll see a puppy and then it's on. thanks again. knot4u:)

So very sorry for your loss. I recently went through this same thing. Its tough and there is no way around that. I think the best thing you can do is just communicate. Talk about feelings and be supportive to each other.

As time passes the pain will slowly subside, and you can find that your memories become mostly those of the good times. Try to focus on those now, too. The recent memory you have now is of the passing, but talk about all of the fun times you had together.

Sending you both lots of good thoughts.

Know how you feel, I had to put one down the day after Christmas a few years ago. Wasn't a happy new year.

Take the time for self healing and reflection and before you know it you will have another 4 legged friend.

If you choose to get another dog, would suggest you go the animal shelter. There are many dogs in need of a home and will never get one. Sadly, many of them are put down. It's a good feeling to know that you gave a dog/cat a second chance. If you're looking for a specific breed or age, call around, there are organizations that track a particular breed in need of a home. The shelters are overflowing in the current economic mess this country is in. Less people able to adopt and many pets turned in because of housing foreclosures, less funding from the cities for shelters etc. It's also cheaper to go to a shelter than paying full price at a breeder/pet shop.

It's a very rewarding feeling to know that you gave a dog/cat a second chance. When I leave the shelter with the dog/cat I think I feel better than they do. One thing I find comforting when it's time to let go of a pet is that I took them out of the shelter and gave them a good life.

today i got a little sad, a coworker was telling me about his dog, 7 yr old poodle (my dads boyhood dog was a poodle, so i don't judge.) that had eaten some plastic and had to have surgery. he commented about how much money it costs to have a dog and i agreed with him, then he asked how my dogs were doing "you've got a jack russel right?", i told him i had to put her down and his demeanor completely changed from just b.s.'n at break to trying to be supportive. it's nice to see that other people consider their pets as family members. my wife and i are getting through it and it's hard. as far as the suggestion about going to a pound or rescue for a dog, i encourage everybody that is looking for a dog to go that route. we rescued a pit bull from a bad situation in my neighborhood 7 yrs ago and i don't regret it. it's not the breed, it's the owners. if jack russels were perfect there wouldn't be rescues for them (although they may be as good as it gets). thanks again for thinking of us. knot4u:)

:(Sorry to hear that man. I have two Dogs and I don't even want to think about making that knid of decision. I had to put my Cat down a couple years back and that was hard enough.

Thanks for the support. I'd like to close this thread but I don't know how. If you're a mod on this board please close it. Again I appreciate the fact that JC members are decent people (hard to find these days). knot4u

That's terrible. I can't imagine my dog not existing, at 5 years old, she still has a lot of years, but I don't know if I could go through with losing her.
My best advise would be to maybe get another dog that reminds you of him/her.
Sorry to hear about the news.. best of luck to you guys.

Very sorry for your loss. Grieve. It shows how much you felt for those family members. (Don't let anyone tell you that animals are not part of the family.) You will get over it. Every living creature will pass away one day. It's the way it is.

We lost our two dogs during the past several years. I have a bunch of digital photos and a screen saver that randomly displays them. When the pictures of either of the dogs come up, I smile. How could you not? (His name was Vinnie but I nicknamed him Crackhead cause his teeth were sooooo bad.)
