Gulfstream Update

Most people do research when they throw down 30K.

I wish that were true, but I think in a world where anyone can get a student loan for any amount, it's easy to sign some papers and obtain instant satisfaction. Especially when visions of making $150k in five years are dancing in your head.

:yeahthat:

With BOA or Keybank, can't remember which, giving 100k loans out like nothing, I don't think youngins recognize what payments are on 30k when their parents have supplied them with a 50k BMW to drive them to school

And that IMO, is what's wrong not only with a lot of people just breaking into aviation today, but with a LOT of youths in general. It's an entitlement mentality. The whole "I paid for it, so I should get it" route. I see people all the time just buying stuff for their kids b/c it's easier. They don't have to explain why they should or shouldn't buy whatever it is, they just do it b/c it's the path of least resistance. To me, that's doing more harm than good for the kid. If my parents hadn't told me "no" or "well, you'll have to work for it yourself" when I was a kid, I probably would have turned out the same way.

Every kid should carry a copy of Jack Welsh's first book with them, highlighting the chapter titled "The Entitlement Mentality"

I agree - in addition, having worked with young people, I believe most have a severely inflated sense for what they'll be making when they come out of college. I asked my h/s students back when I taught h/s econ what most people make out of college, and most said between 80k-120k a year. Eeeks!
