Guard/Reserve training timeline

Nah, my problem is my recruiter. He's not exactly forthcoming in providing me with information, and he's hard to get a hold of. Reminds me of my Guard recruiter 7 years ago....

Granted it's been a few years since I went to UPT, but if you want a UPT slot with a Guard or Reserve unit, you need to talk directly to the pilots in the squadrons you are interested in. The recruiter is just the conduit through which your paperwork will flow.

If you have a unit in mind that you want to rush, find out who the bellybutton is, what resume, log books, etc they want, and when their UTAs are and then call that person once or twice a month for short, just to show I'm interested phone calls. Show up for a drilll or two if it's economically feasible once you get a good feeling for a place. For a fighter squadron, show up on Friday afternoon around 1400, discretely drop off a handle of Jim or Jack with "from Snuffy" on it in grease pencil in the bar (that's a handle, not a fifth), then just kinda act interested and talk to the bros.

Anyway, BL is don't give up if it's what you want to do.

About the Spouse at UPT thing, my GF at the time drove in from San Antonio once every month or 2. I thought it worked well because she didn't have to put up with me ignoring her while I studied or worked for the 16-18 hours a day, 6 days a week that was UPT. Also, she wasn't there to witness me making a drunken clown out of myself at the club when we blew off steam on Friday nights. If you do get married I make the following VAST generalizations:

1. Live on base. The 20 minutes that you save each way to work is 20 more minutes of family/study time you have.

2. Be ready for her to get pregnant. I think we had 12-14 married folk in our class and I think there were 12-14 Del Rio babies.

3. Prepare her in advance. Let her know up front that she is going to be neglected for the next 12-24 months, depending on what airplane you get. If she doesn't have a hobby, I'd encourage one.

Good luck and enjoy UPT, it should be a great time.

I already got my slot, I was just venting about my recruiter. I saw that Frog already has dates for courses beyond OTS, and I haven't heard a word from my recruiter since he told me my OTS date. I've called him a few times and sent emails, with no reply. I'm sure my training timeline is coming together fine, I'd just appreciate knowing what that timeline is.

It took me 5 months from the start of paperwork just to enlist in the Guard 7 years ago, due to the exact same problem...the Phantom Recruiter.

Time to "motivate" him with a call from my new CC...

This info didn't come from my recruiter. I haven't talked to him since he called me last week reminding me to not get arrested, hurt, or a chick pregnant.

The email came from CF (I'm sure you know the name) and went through my DO. It's a HQAFRC Form 0-16. Call the unit. I guarandamntee you they know something.

See you in 2 weeks!

Frog, I stand corrected. I'll call my contact at my unit. Thanks!

Thanks for the response if4not, I explained to her that the folks on here know what they are talking about and read your response word for word. Do you have any suggestions for getting in touch with the "need to know" guys at units? I'm really interested in doing C-5's or C-17's and I'm particularly interested in the C-17's in Charleston, SC. I contacted their recruiter and he referred me to the local recruiter. Any suggestions for getting in with the pilots at the wings I'm most interested in? I have the benefit of either flying standby or flying myself out to pay the unit a visit and I would be happy to do so this summer.

But why male models?

Dude, I already told you what you need to do. Read my last post.

My apologies mhcasey, its been a very long day and I spaced a bit. I think I'll stop posting until tomorrow as my brain is turning to mush lol.

UK, it sounds like you might work for an airline since you can fly standby. Spread the word. Talk to chief pilots, dispatchers, crew schedulers, whoever. See if you can get in touch with any pilots, and ask if they know anyone who flies with the squadrons you're working with.

If you aren't pushy and are tactful in how you go about doing it, you should do alright. I did it and I've been able to get in touch with pilots at 5 or 6 units.

Plan to stay on active duty orders for at least a year after you finish UPT. That'll be enough time for the other schools you have to go through and for in-unit seasoning in your major weapon system.

Justin172, I have some indirect access to airline employees and do have flight benefits through the same family member (Dad is a pilot for a major) and he has been asking around when he is on trips to help me out and make some contacts.

germb thanks for the advice, I will def. plan on doing that!
