guard enlisted + civillian flight career= ?

Man, all you people must have the time to get your degrees, your licenses, all that stuff. I am in the Air Force Reserve with 6 years total time in service. I have four and a half years on active duty, and the remainder in the Reserve. I am an aircraft electrician in the Air Force. I work in the postal service as a civilian. I was thinking about going for my pilot's ratings but I dont have time or money as my civilian job takes up all my time. Plus, I can not go to school since my civilian job takes up all my time not including reserve, too. God bless all you people who have time and motivation to pursue everything that you want to. I am still an E-4 with 6 years in service.

I cant drink coffee, LOL. It puts me to sleep. What do you do in the Air Force? What pilot's ratings do you have? Everything that I get involed with I quit because my civilian job takes up too much of my time to study for school and fliying lessons. plus, I am out of money in debt. I got out of active duty Air Force through Palace Chase two years ago. I have not gotten anywhere. I am thinking of quiting the Postal Service, too. I have had nothing but crumby jobs since I got out of the Air Force.

I'm a 2nd year CRJ FO at SkyWest and a SSgt C5 Loadmaster in the reserves. It can be tough to do both at times but I am glad i'm still in the reserves. Having the extra income made the first year tolerable.
Hey,

How are you doing? I am an Air Force reservist. I just got a question to ask you? I am an aircraft electrical and environmental systems technician on the KC-10 in the Air Force. I have six years TIS, four and a half of those on active duty. I was thinking of pursuing my civilian ratings, but I kept on running out of money. Can you please tell me where did you get your ratings and if it was a VA approved school? Why did you go the civilian route and not the military route? The civilian aviation world sucks nowadays with all the major airlines going south financially. Do you get good benefits at Skywest? Thanks.

Sorry to hear of your luck. Basically, I never went on a single date for about 2 years! C-130 Crew Chief. My sign on bonus bought a real good used car, took out a loan on that to pay for my PPL. After that I had to take out a small loan through SLM just enough to get my Inst. Rating. After that, credit was built up enough to get me another loan just enough to cover my Commercial! I'm taking that checkride in a couple weeks.

I'm in real deep debt now! But that includes Credit Cards, Car Payment, & mortgage, but out of the money I borrowed, I still have 11K left in my flight training account!!! That's what the VA will do for you!!! :rawk:

Hope this gives you some perspective!

I was thinking about taking out a loan to cover my PPL. I dont want to get stuck in massive debt. I already have good credit as it is. I just joined a flying club at a nearby naval base. I have not been flying for a few years. Plus, I started taking classes again at Embry-Riddle. I actually have not flown or taken classes in a few years. I really want to be a military pilot and I am 26 years old. For now, I am thinking about cross training to be either an FE or a boom operator. Thanks for your perspective. I have not used my VA benefits as of yet. Talk to you later. Bye.

I was 'nother dateless wonder for while too, lol. Here's my map-

96-00 AD AF
97-00 Dominos Pizza (Paid for my Pvt-SE Comm)
took out a loan and used GI Bill for Inst/Comm
00-01 Signature
01-03 Cleaned corporate a/c for a bank at night
01-02 Flight Instructed
02-03 Part-time right seat in KA
03-06 Flew Skydivers
03-05 Deployed to various locations on and off and did ERAU online
00-present Air National Guard

January 06- FINALLY got a full-time flying job

That's just some of what I've been doing for work. Fit my flight training in there and all the exta days and months I've worked at the Guard as a Guard Bum. Girls?? Lol...:(...lol...:banghead:

You are in a similar situations as I am (26y/o vet), except, I am not in debt and with a bit of savings. Myself: 4 yrs in the navy fixing planes, got out, went back to school for a non-tech major, graduated. Now, I am looking back, a 4-year non-tech degree is not going to get me anywhere but a 40 to 50k paper pushing job. Sometimes, I wish I would of gone to ROTC and become an naval or AF officer. Just last year, I became interested in this crazy as5 career (flying for peanuts). I done extensive of research and lost the motivation as soon as I found out the outcome of it (making 18k for the next 4 yrs).
Currently, I have 3 options for a career change.

1. Civilian Pilot
2. Navy Scholorships (med or nursing school)
3. OCS or ROTC, become an officer (non-flying job), finish up my remaining 16 yrs, retired at 42 to 46 and do whatever I want later (like flying).

SKYHAWK! One advice, "AFROTC" get a student loan, use your GI-bill, get a 10-20 hrs/wk job, and try for a pilot slot (or other field). The age limit for any prior enlisted is "to finish the program and commission before 30." Your time is running out...

Let me know what you think as far as the suggestion and my career options.

i am coming up on the end of my enlistment in a little less than a year. i am obviously attempting a guard slot at my home unit and others. if i am not successful my first attempt this summer, i am going to attend atp....

so does anybody have any experience or insight into remaining enlisted as you begin the career? i just want to ensure i won't kill myself trying to make drills as a cfi or a first year FO.

Silly question here, for I'm somewhat naive about drilling as a guard/ reservist, but you can't do both? As a guard/reservist, you can't defer that drill until completion of your ATP program?

I did my training at a local VA approved flight school. If I had to do it again, i'd do it the same way. I went the civilian route because I didn't have my degree. I have it now and am looking for a pilot slot in the AF reserves. The benefits at SkyWest are pretty good for a regional. Nothing compare to the military though. Although i'm not a pilot in the AF, SkyWest liked that I had military experience. There were 2 other enlisted guys in my new hire class

You'll make more money doing the drills than you will as a CFI or first year FO.

It's up to the Unit commander but in my unit I can move my drills foreward or back a month. For example, I was really busy this month, so i rescheduled my April drills for the 2 days before my May drills. I will probably do my June drills the 2 days after the May drills. I'll get 3 months knocked out in one week.

Man those ANG chat advisors are good for nothing. I'm a high school senior graduating next month and just because I'm 16 and will be turning 17 in about a month, he turned me away and said he can't talk to me by law. Yet I have the Marines, Navy, and AF recruiting offices calling me weekly wanting to talk to me and trying to get me to do stuff. I bet that isn't illegal. And I also talked to the USAF chat advisor and asked him and he said for me to just go ahead and ask the questions. And I realized it was like a freaking computer talking to me. I'd ask about the vision waiver for getting a pilot slot and he'd list the basic qualifications to becoming a pilot. (US Citizen, degree, 2.5 GPA...).

Navy Reserve

A little secret. I'm a Crewchief in the Navy Reserves. Flying DC-9's your actually the flight engineer. Great deal good locations. For a starving CFI flying part time and the contacts you make you couldn't pay for better. The majority of the reserve pilots fly for the majors and just about every company is represented in a squadron. I'm active duty right now but will be leaving to do this part time and go to an academy someone but I'm keeping my contacts with my pilots. The deployments are only 2 weeks a year. You can do more if you want but not required the work is cake. The last time they were activated for war was Desert Shield/Storm. Its a damn safe bet if your not into 1 year activation or more in the army and other services worth checking out.
