guard enlisted + civillian flight career= ?

i am coming up on the end of my enlistment in a little less than a year. i am obviously attempting a guard slot at my home unit and others. if i am not successful my first attempt this summer, i am going to attend atp....

so does anybody have any experience or insight into remaining enlisted as you begin the career? i just want to ensure i won't kill myself trying to make drills as a cfi or a first year FO.

I'm a 2nd year CRJ FO at SkyWest and a SSgt C5 Loadmaster in the reserves. It can be tough to do both at times but I am glad i'm still in the reserves. Having the extra income made the first year tolerable.

I'm an Active Duty Air Force enlisted Crew Chief, and I'm just finishing up my Commercial. No pro experience yet, but hoping to get on with the skydive school this summer. I really want to CFI, but I doubt my schedule will be that flexible for the students sake.

So far, its been busy getting my ratings aside from work. But I still had time to get my B.S. at the same time. I didn't have a wife or g/f at the time though.

I am also looking at the possibilities of switching to the Guard, that way I can get a move on my professional flying career, instead of slip slop hours on the weekend! I could use some advice here too!

I am in the Navy reserves. One weekend a month I go to drill, which isn't bad, but I work 2 and a half jobs. We are suppose to go active duty for 2 weeks for our annual training, but our requests are always denied because of funding (Stupid War). But besides that I am a full-time CFI at the local university. The reserves really isn't much in the way right now for my career. The civilian employers have to let you off to go to drill. Some may hold it against you, but mine doesn't. When if I ever go to the airlines it might be a little harder to do drill but I heard it is possible.

After 4 years active duty, I joined the Guard. In six years, I've obtained my CFI and multi; taken 24 classes to get my degree; been to Spain, Goose Bay, Guam, France, Germany, Cyprus, Hawaii (seven times), and England; and just got hired at Airnet flying freight.

BTW, I LOVE the Guard. Best career move I've ever made.

thanks for everyone's input.

the guard is a great deal and i am pretty sure i am at least going to extend. the real problem is that my career field has a 15k reenlistment bonus for a six year commitment. six years is awhile and i am not sure if i can fly for a regional and drill for a whole six years. i am still praying about it.

for forty years, my unit has been doing summer camps at deployed locations, from denmark to gulfport, ms. however, since i have been in the unit, we have been away only once. the money is getting tight and they may not allow me to do AT due to MPA days i am taking at ang headquarter tour.

anybody that joined the reserves worried at first about doing it? Looking at joining the local unit and have my doubts. Is it possible to transfer units or is that look downed upon?

I was worried as heck. I didn't have a good impression of the AF when I was enlisted, so I had a hard time signing up for another 6 years in the military. I'm glad I did. It's not for everybody, though.

Transfering isn't a big deal if the unit you want to transfer to has a slot available and you didn't just get out a training and decide to transfer with no good reason.

i have a friend who transfered from arkansas to oregon w/ no problems. this was in the guard, and the reserves should be even easier due to the lack of a state mission.

Was he a guard to guard transfer? I'm trying to find out about an Active to Guard transfer, if that's possible. Any insight?

There are two programs, Palace Chase and Palace Front. Palace Chase is for AD that still have enlistment remaining and Palace Front is for AD that want to transfer directly to Guard/Reserves after their AD enlistment.

The program you seek is called Palace Chase....I've sent you a secure link, check your PM's.

A good few of my buddies have put in for this. With Force Shaping and the AF needing to get rid of 40K+ by 2010, they still got denied, even though our jet is boneyard bound beginning early this next fiscal year. Even though Palace Chase is supposedly open to all AFSCs, most of the 11Fs I've seen apply for it have gotten the thumbs-down by AFPC.

Sucks...I tried 3 times to Palace Chase as a 2A551 back in the late 90's and same crap. Big N-O. When my enlistment was up I just Palace Front-ed.

Dumb thing is, it's open to all officer AFSCs right now and the AF needs to get rid of officers, but 11Fs aren't getting approved. Why not just say not open to rated or "the following AFSCs are exempt.."

Trust me, no offense taken.....these are my sentiments exactly!!!

Stuff has gotten so out of hand with an organization who's mission is to supposedly fly and fight....no wonder we're the laughing stock of the other armed services.
