Grounded...

Well, looks like I'll be stuck on Terra Firma for the next few weeks...

Found out I have a tear in my left ear drum (found out by the excruciating pain and the blood). I guess it must have gotten weakened this weekend flying, and last night I was blowing my nose and WHAMMO, felt like someone stuck a knife in my ear...

So, gotta keep the pressure changes to nil for the next few weeks and let it heal

I think I'll be doing alot a ground work with my students... Whilst our other CFIs cover the flying.

Damn the luck!

I feel your pain.

I ruptured the ear drum in my right ear a total of seven times over the years. First did it barefoot water skiing, then after it had been blown out a few times it got so a hard fall in the slalom course could rupture the old scar tissue. I pretty well had it down to a science as far as knowing how long before the pain would start (I could usually drive the boat for about an hour, then drive to the med center and wait in line for a couple of hours, get some Tylenol III in my system about the time it would really start to hurt.

It actually comes in handy now, since I have a little hearing loss on that side. If I'm stuck in a noisy hotel I can sleep with my good ear in the pillow and it knocks the sound level down about 3dB.

Ouch. That's gotta be one of the most painful things to experience.

Sorry dude, at least it'll get better!

How long will it take to heal?

I really don't know... Navy IDCs (independent duty corpsman) aren't the most informative bunch...

I know I have to go in after a week to make sure it's starting to heal at least, then they'll make the determination of the total time then. (hopefully and actual Doctor will make the call next week)

So, if it takes a few hours for the pain, I guess it ruptured some time before I thought, and just a coincidence that the pain was the same time as the nose blow...

But in any event, I hope it doesn't keep me down too long... I just started my CFII and need to get it knocked out so I can go to Cirrus School...

Are they differnt from the regular "pecker checkre's"?

Anyhow, sorry to hear about the ear thing. At least now when your significant others asks you for something, you can claim injury and say you didn't hear it.

BTW, do live in Navy housing in Charleston? I used to live in MenRiv Park. If I recall it was over towards the Goose Creek area.

If you're referring to my comments, I'll have to (beep...beep...beep) back the bus up a little and say that there is definitely some pain right when the rupture happens. I could always tell when I blew it out 'cause I could hold my nose and blow air out my ear. Freaky feeling. And it did hurt. It's just that the pain usually got worse a few hours later and that's when the codiene (washed down with some medicinal alcohol) became a requirement, not just a luxury.

Wish I had some of that TIII... Heck, I didn't even get any regular Tylonol... I had to go get it myself. All I got were some Amoxociillan and sudafed from the nav...

I used to live in MenRiv... but bought a house 'bout 8 months ago...

I did mine once while leading a wilderness canoe trip. I was swimming and caught a knee to the ear and just plain destroyed my eardrum (and filled my ear with some nasty water). Took me days to get out of the woods and to a doctor. The local docs just cringed and said, "That’s got to hurt" and sent me to a specialist in Boston. Several specialists had doubts about my hearing and were sure I would need surgery, but it ended up healing on its own (well with lots of cleaning and after the infection was under control) and my hearing was back to normal within about three months.

I agree doing that is no fun.

Be careful. They may decide to amputate to fill a prac fac for a nub.

Sorry to hear about it. That sucks.

Sorry man.

Guess it'd be a bad idea to ask you if you wanted to head to the Basin? They're still skiing there, bro!

I'd love to... But, darn it!

Nothing like some early summer skiing!

There will always be next year though.

Sucks all this had to happen after I hade a kick a$$ time in the clouds Monday. I was looking forward to flying 3-4 more times this week and taking my checkride sometime soon after.

I'm starting to realize how bored I'm going to be until this heals...
frown.gif
I'm typically flying 4-5 days a week. Guess I can wash some airplanes to suppliment the loss of income from not flying, and to pass the time... But the airplanes can only get so clean...

Re: Grounded... NO LONGER!

BEEN CLEARED TO FLY!!! The eardrum is healed over, and the doc says as long as I can Valsalva both ears, no reason I can't fly.

Back to the sky and on to that CFII...
