Isn't the written the same thing as the flight instructor written? It just has a few more questions right?
So if I already have my CFI rating, all I have to do is go to my local FSDO, fill out an 8710, bring some $$, and retake the same flight instructor written I already took?

Basically, but make sure it says "GROUND INSTRUCTOR." You can't take flight instructor written results in and get a ground instructor certificate.

The only real advantage to getting the GI rating is that you no longer have to log in your student's book the amount of ground instruction you gave them right?

I don't follow you... Either way, you should still log their ground instruction *somewhere*. I've got the ground instructor ratings, and don't do anything different because of them. They just take up space in my wallet and on my resume.
