Greatlakes pays more than Skywest?

A buddy of mine asked me what I thought of Great Lakes. I of course said stay away...bla bla bla. I told him the pay is horrible. Then he replied with, "no, it's better than Skywest." I said, "no way!"

So anyway...I looked it up. Apparently Great Lakes has upped the pay scale. It shows two different pay scales; one for ATP qualified first officers, and one non-ATP qual.

ATP qualified first officer first year pay is $27.50. Skywest is $24.

Yes Great Lakes is garbage...bla bla bla, but I thought that was interesting enough to share.

Yeah, first year but after that you will make more as an FO at Skywest than as a Captain at Great Lakes. They also only have like 30 captains left so not sure how much longer they will be around.

I think the underlying story here is just how desperate Great Lakes is. I'm almost positive that their first year pay was like $16 a few months ago. And where on earth did they get enough cash to offer that large of a an increase. That's $11 increase. Nearly a 70% increase in first year pay...??

I didnt realize the Skywest rates were as high as they were. Our first year pay starts out higher, but only tops out at $40/hr after year 5.

At this point, Great Mistakes needs to just go. They are completely unreliable and are now doing a disservice to the communities they "serve". People are choosing to drive to the nearest Bravo for their 121 service instead of using GL to puddle jump. This is killing what little confidence people had left in their air-service at these small airports and whomever replaces GL at those airports will have their work cut out for them. Even with a change in service providers, the populous will assume the carrier that replaces GL will be just as unreliable. The new providerr will have to dig themselves out of a huge hole that GL left them with.

Guys, chill. GLA is becoming a 135 feeder. Comparing it to a 121 regional is not apples to apples. GLA is for sub 1500hr guys, not ATPs.

For now, long term it is still bad for the industry that places like Great Lakes exist. We need to lift all boats and make this a feasible career again. The idea that you can be responsible for other peoples' lives and get paid less than McDonald's wages is a problem. Maybe if they become single pilot 135 and take the FO pay and apply it to the CA scale would it be okay.

Becoming, yes, but explain that to the communities they serve who gave Lakes the contract for 19-seat part-121 airline service to hub cites. Instead, they're getting 9-seat service when the flight doesn't cancel due to staffing. They would have been better off going with Seaport and similar PC-12/C208 outfits had they known, I'm sure they're livid.

I'm not going to argue against that, but as far as being a career stop for a pilot- it's a safe operation that just gave raises to pilots that are on rung "1" of the career ladder.

But if you're comparing to a Regional job, it shouldn't be at the top of the pile.

wow... at least they're honest... from their First Officer listing:

"Transportation to the interviews (if selected) is not provided. Additionally class, if selected, lasts 8-12 weeks and is unpaid."

I know nothing of GLA. Do they have cancellation pay, 100% DH, holiday pay, JM pay, block or better (or half your sched duty day - whichever is more), min day guarantee, what's their per diem, etc? So MUCH more to life than just a pay scale!

Complete horsescat. Sometimes I talk to people in other industries, and I'm amazed at how much nonsense we put up with. Any reasonably sized corporation wouldn't think twice about buying you a ticket, putting you up in a hotel, and buying you meals for the interview process. They would literally wine and dine you for the whole interview process. Paid on the job training wouldn't even be a question. Seriously guys, get a degree in engineering. Companies will fight for you... I would, but I'm too much of an airplane nerd. It's too late for me! Get out while you can! :p

I don't know how people can even make that work. Up to 4 months of no income, while making payments on an expensive flight training debt. You'd have to be well off, have 0 debt, or have parents help you. That truly is a load of horsecat.
