So tonight I stop at the Target pharmacy to pick up some medication for my young one and some guy was kind of looking at my shirt like he wanted to say something. It was a shirt from my days in the Navy. Finally he says, "Are you in the military?". I was kind of stunned for a split second and replied, "Yes, I used to be in the Navy". He just smiled and said "Thanks for what you do !". I just stood there for a second not sure why he was asking or what he might say in return. And then replied, "You're welcome, and it was no problem. I enjoyed it". Just strange, but it felt good.

Has anyone else had anything like that happen, whether bad or good? I guess the thing that made it weird is that Minneapolis is not a military town per se.
 
Sometimes I will swing by the mall in my BDU's and it only takes a couple minutes before someone stops me and thanks me. But the real reason I go in with my BDU's is that the uniform makes the ladies legs weak and they can't help but look.

I usually just thank them back for paying their taxes so I can help misappropriate it as deemed necessary!

Well I guess that there arent any real concrete rules on exactly where you can go in your BDU's. I was told in basic you will be ok swinging into a store on the way home from work in your BDU's. But we can wear our blues wherever we please. Marines can wear dress uniform wherever you want as well right?

The rules differ from service to service, and from there differ from base to base.

don't worry, no one pays any attention to me anywhere. In fact, when I'm in civvies, I have to actually convince people that I'm in the military for some reason. They never believe I am.

Marines can only go certain places in their utility uniform.

Work, gas station (stay at the pump), MAYBE picking up kids on base at the daycare...that's about it. For us, it's strictly a work uniform. Anyplace else (with few exceptions), you need to be in a more appropriate uniform, or civies.

Not us. Only to a store to get essential fluids for a car (gas, oil, antifreeze).

Depends. Dress blue "B" (coat, ribbons & badges...no medals), "C" (long sleeve shirt, blue trousers) and "D" (Short sleeve shirt, same as before)...yes, anywhere. Acceptable for liberty.

Dress Blue "A" (coat, medals, ribbons for which no medal has been struck)...no. Only for solemn occasions. Funerals, official ceremonies, weddings, Marine Corps Birthday Balls.

Hey, Sickbird...I know you think we're nuts, but we take our stuff pretty seriously....

To which I reply, the Concorde.

LOL, I was referring to the "groupies" out there looking to land a mil guy. Not too prevelant in Tucson, but more so around some of the middle-of-nowhere bases in the US.......ie- Laughlin AFB, Cannon AFB, etc.

Whoa!!! I havn't run into any groupies yet but I sure wouldn't mind meeting some! Although I hear Cannon is a little bit boring so I don't know if it would be worth it. Is that where the F-117's are based or is it somewhere else?

That is funny as hell, but outside of the aviation and military world people would have no idea what either kind of Captain is. Captain of a ship maybe? Captain Sulu? (I despise Star Trek and all it stands for, disregard the Sulu comment.)

117s are at Holloman. You won't really see the groupies around big cities, ie-Tucson or San Antonio, but at the bases with the really small towns nearby.
 
People ask me what I do. So I say I'm a "first officer" then they ask "What's that?" then I say "A copilot" -- then they ask either "When do you get to be pilot" or "How does it feel watching someone else fly the airplane?"

Mike, do you realize how many hotties you could get if you made a shirt with big words saying "Hi, I fly a stealth bomber and I'm horny!"?
 
But then he'd need to find somewhere to stay because his wife would kick his hairy ass.
 
Just tell your wife the stealth is top secret, so stay away, and take the groupie into the "cockpit". Sounds reasonable to me.
 
Right after 9/11 18 members of my Guard unit where eating out and a gentlemen came over and insisted on paying for all of us - about a $200 bill. He said he was not far in NY when the planes struck and he just appreciated what we do.

When I was stationed in Oklahoma, I had several of my breakfasts paid for by friendly older people. It usually wasn't in the town the base was in though. I used to drive a long way to the base, so I would stop in a small town on the way and have breakfast at a greasy spoon while wearing my flight suit. I was always very thankful and would go over to their table and talk to them for a few minutes. Most of the guys were old vets.
