Great Lakes

Things change daily here, including upgrade times. Movement has started again as the mid to upper level seniority captain's are getting some corporate flying jobs and several captain's have been hired at XOJET with more waiting to interview from what the rumor mill has said. As far as FO's bailing, there are guys who are leaving before their 14 month contract is over (I'm guessing because they don't believe the company will come after them for it) to go to other regionals like Skywest, Compass and Pinnacle but from my experience this always happens whenever the other regionals really start to hire. It's the reason why Lakes has the training contract in the first place since guys used to come here and bail to Air Wisconsin after a few months.

There's plenty of posts here and everywhere else about Lakes. I would take the bad stuff and combine it with the good stuff and believe about half of it to make your decision. I've posted my opinions here about working for Lakes before so you can that for what it's worth but my only advice straight up to anyone is to do your research before you come so you don't find yourself in a position that you didn't expect to be in. It can be a really great place to work at times and a really crappy one at others. In the end it all depends on what you're willing to put up with to get your TPIC time. And don't believe the naysayers about TPIC in the 1900 or Brasilia being worthless. You may not get a job right away, especially if you upgrade right at 1500 TT, but I'd rather have that 1000 of 1900 or Brasilia TPIC in my back pocket instead of sitting on thousands of hours of RJ SIC time when I want to move on with my career.

Pilots have paid $35k or more out of their pocket to pay for their regional airline training and then work for free at Gulfstream so landing a Great Lakes job would be like hitting the lotto to some people.

You should Google "lottery winner suicides"

With that line of thinking, professional baseball players should paid in oranges, capri sun and pizza parties after each game. I am tired of hearing the hobby verses career argument. If you are a professional pilot, it is no longer a hobby, period.

Ah a majority of pro ball players make less then pilots. Plus there gone twice as much.

Be careful with going to Lakes or anything PFJ or GIA whatever... It really burns me why pilots try to justify why they're companies pay them so bad. But outside of that theres a few things that should be debunked:

1. Myth: OMG QUICKUPGRADE! Fact: This industry is incredibly turbulent and who know what will happen over the next few years. What happens if the economy slides again, gas goes up and your stuck there as an FO? What then?

2. Myth: I can survive of that pay! Its okay! Fact: Not going to get into the pilot professionalism it affects the industry blah blah blah. But remember, whether your 25 or 50... for every thousand dollars you don't earn now... you need to make $10,000 in 20 years to make up for it.

Whenever I apply to a company I look over they're financials, they're profile on APC, the forums and try to talk to someone there to see what its like. If I found myself having to reallllyyyy justify why I want to work there for one reason of another... its probably not a place I want to work.

Because winning the lottery isn't all it's often cracked up to be..

Umm.. No..

The minimum 2011 salaries for the:

MLB - $414,000..
NBA - $473,604..
NFL - $340,000..
NHL - $500,000..

Maybe what you meant to say was "a majority of pro soccer players make less than pilots." Since their minimum salary is $30,000 for the 2011 season.

You should pass along your winning ticket to me. You'll probably referring to the fact that over 50% of lotto winners go broke in a few years because they don't have the discipline or understand the concept of using your money to make money.

OOh! I like alternate reality money. I use denominations of "kerjiggers". As in, I make 50 million kerjiggers...

Kerjiggers are good.. I deal in skerlies myself.

It's pretty hard to have a winning ticket when you don't play the game..

... and since you have all this money you know exactly how you'd act with it, right?

I imagine he was including all the ball players in the minors.

See, I start every interview off letting them know I will fly for free. I have no shortage of job offers.

Can I get a ride to work somebody?

I don't know if I've ever read your posts before or not but man these 2 posts absolutely crack me up. That's GOLD Jerry GOLD!!! kudos.

If you are a professional pilot, it is no longer a hobby, period.

Everyone should feel that way if they are going to do this as a career whether it be their first second or whatnot.

I never said I won the lotto now did I? I do act responsibly with my funds though and I drink lots of milk so I don't break any bones.

No, but you are presumptuous enough to act like you know how you'd act if you won the money.. You don't. You can't.

I drink "pert near" a gallon of milk a day and I recently turned my elbow into crunchy bits..

To each their own. I had a decent size inheritance about 5 years ago and that money is still around working for me. It's about having discipline and living modestly if that's what floats your boat. I could buy depreciating assets and live for today but I sleep better at night knowing if I lost my job tomorrow I wouldn't have to stress.

Ah, well that explains some of your comments and lack of understanding why not all of us can consider flying a hobby and expect to be paid for our time spent "for the man."
