Lol, Great Lakes is the regional to end all regionals. While my understanding of their QoL and schedule is lacking, I don't know how you could support a family there, even on captain pay. I made more at my old job flying a Cherokee 6 than a 9 year EMB120 captain on min guarantee. Of course, they might have a really awesome schedule (which I did not), but I doubt it. The only benefit seems to be that you could live in a cool place during your time off. At least it wouldn't cost you anything to go hiking.

Hearsay? I Hear you make less than any other airline. I hear you qualify for food stamps on your salary while flying 32 lives around. Is that true? or simply "hearsay"
 
It's hard not to apply. Really it is. I've considered it. To be honest the biggest issue for me is the unpaid training. Yes they pay is crap for the real world, but the pay would be more than I am making now. It's frustrated seeing all the posts in these kinds of threads telling people to have self respect and loyalty to their chosen profession by not taking these jobs. Fine. I don't take the job, someone else will. That's someone that is moving ahead in their career whilst I am still stagnant. Resignation is sitting in folks. The great lakes of this industry are looking more and more appealing.
 
The point of going to Great Lakes is not to get paid well or even much at all actually, it's to get that PIC experience and move on quickly.
 
current 1 year upgrade means you'll be making first year captain pay during your second year there which is more than a third year FO makes at Eagle. You get the 1000 turbine PIC after about 3-4 years with the company and move onto to greater things. For some people its sit at a low paying instructing job, or go to lakes make more than you are now while building multi time and multi turbine pic.
 
I made more instructing and I worked at a well below standard pay flight school. First year FO at monthly guarantee = $14,400/year. Training not paid. 15-month training contract: $7,500. I want the turbine time and to get to the majors as much as any other guy, but those numbers make my stomach turn upside down..

Their first year guarantee is a pay raise for me. The details of my situation are not important. What is important for me is that 50 hours a month is good for me. Does Lakes' pay turn my stomach? yes, but they turn my stomach slightly less than a lot of stuff out there including my current gig...and only gig I have available. Great Lakes may be crap, but for some of us they are still the next rung UP on the crap ladder

Why do people feel the need to always bash threads with "Great Lakes" in the title? If you don't like the way they operate or the way the pay system is setup, then simply don't go there. Doesn't make sense to me why everyone wants to bash the place when they haven't worked there.
