Government shutdown

You could ask the last three Democrats that lived in the Whitehouse. They seemed to have figured out a way to push things in the right direction.

(Source of data is OMB. Source of graphic is unknown, but I did spot check a few of the numbers with the OMB data and they match.)

Are you counting the March 2020 and Oct 2020 Covid $$$$$$$ relief crap? Troubled Asset Relief BS? Because if that’s included in the 2020 bar graph, that’s one horsecrap way to skew the data.

It seems as if many here are placing blame on republicans for being stubborn for not compromising, aren't democrats doing the exact same thing? I saw something earlier today about how Diane Feinstein was feisty and a pit bull, but she also knew that principled compromise was the way forward. But you're all hair triggered to HATE. Thanks Obama.

Citing reputable sources and outlining relevant facts, what are your thoughts on the causes of the impending shutdown?

I think the real lesson here is one of the wages of cowardice. The sane (or, increasingly, less-INSANE) (R)s have been whittled down, like peeling an onion. There were the McCains who warned us against the loony populists before they had a name. Then Cheney, Sasse, etc. Then the Romneys and Pences. Now the wolf is at the door for even McCarthy and his ilk, who in any other circumstances would be considered pretty nuts themselves. The tragedy is that if they'd all stood together against the *total* lunatics from the outset (and I guarantee you that they all knew that they *should*), a lot of this wouldn't have happened.

Humor me this, I’ve always heard we can print our own way with the dollar being the reserve currency and that increasing debt ceilings are irrelevant because all we have to do is service that debt. Well shoot, inflation being what it is and soaring interest rates, how expensive is it going to be to service that increasing debt? And where is that money gonna come from, increased taxes?

I’m super glad you’re not involved in setting fiscal policy! :)

The thing that really puzzles me is that out of about 220 Republicans, only about 20 are fully on the crazy train. The rest are just so damn scared of the electorate that voted for the crazy train, that they aren't willing to do anything about it. There are plenty of moderate to center Democrats that would support a lot of reasonable policy, but the 200 or so Republicans that would join them are just too afraid about being able to get reelected when Fox and OAN are coming after them next year for "working across the aisle".

There was certainly some of that going on when the Democrats had a majority, but nowhere near the same amount. I can't really think of anybody that was worried about getting primaried by somebody farther to their left because of their actions on the floor.

This is called "projection", look it up.

As one of over half of the voting population who “rigged” 2020 for a Democrat, I’m always surprised that conservative outlets excoriate those of their own persuasions who do work with the other side of the aisle. The Senate is engaged in a bipartisan effort for a continuing resolution, and when the Senate is the organization that’s getting work done, well, now we’ve gone to pot.

Working with ideological opposites and those of the other party is better called governing, and it’s something that Dems do and Reps apparently can’t. The Speaker can’t even keep his own caucus in line, much less get a continuing resolution, the lowest of legislative bars, done.

Is that why Krysten Sinema and Joe Manchin have been told by members of their own party to get back into line or get voted out? Seems Dems thought it fine when McCain reached across the aisle, but when their own did…..no bueno.

The only true compromise there is in Congress is for their own pay raises.

Lol Sinema and Manchin didn’t reach across the aisle, they sat in the other “sides” seats and joined them.

Im just glad I'm about to be asked to work 6 days a week without pay, indefinitely, so Matt F'ing Gaetz can make his big point about..........nothing?

At least last time they worked me for over a month, 6 days a week, over the holidays, with no pay check, it was for a concrete thing; Trump throwing a hissy fit over his border wall he said Mexico was going to pay for.

This time its for......GOP Theatre? Makes 0 sense.

This...was what they want to do.
