Gotta love life on the ramp.

Spent the first half of my day working the ramp(DTW) as I normally do. 12:30 till about 4ish, even got to see another member. Needed me over in Control so I was inside. I knew it was too good to be true. Get out of the Control at 10:30(if you thought it was a trainee on the comms getting your gate assignments, well you were right). My coworkers in the lav had all left me, so I was stuck until last flight. No biggie, it was only an hour or so longer.

Low and behold, State College comes back(1/4 mi vis) and is cancelled, another goes, but then comes back with maintenance issues, and then that is swapped for a good plane. Saved some luggage with that one, another ramper was taking his anger out on the passengers checked bags(Montreal). By then its 12:30a. Everyone is itching to get out, its snowing, etc. We were supposed to have 17 some odd late night, we had 6. apparently 11 walked off. Hartford is delayed because of maintenance from earlier in the day, we are sitting around waiting for it to get canceled. They pushed it back to 2:30am. At 2:25, they give it the go ahead to go, but guess what, its an air-start! So its snowing, Ive already been at work 14 hours, and now got an air-start to do. We are down to 4 of us on the ramp, fortunately it consists of those type of rampers who actually have some sort of professionalism. We get the air-start going, but they start the wrong engine(thanks, lol). Finally they are pushed out around 3, but we have to wait for it to get out of range. 40 minutes later we get told its out of range(it had to deice). We scramble for the door, but the bus shutdown hours ago. I volunteer to ferry folks to the lot, I dont get to my car till 4:15am, roads slippery, icy, just crap. Head hits the pillow at 5am.

And finally up at 9 today for the family Christmas that's been delayed because Ive worked the past two days. Merry Christmas! Have a safe new year.

Geesh man.

But i'll tell ya what- thank you for being a helpful/professional at your job!

There are those of us that appreciate it!

There's a lot of crap to put up with (sometimes quite literally) on the ramp but then there's some days that make it worthwhile. Must be crazy getting off of work right when the morning shift is showing up.

Wow, what a night!:insane:

The worst I have had is when we had maybe seven people and we had to do a 757, 737, and an A319 at the same time.

All to familiar! I feel your pain, this weekend consisted of a 0300 pull, diversion from PHL, cold rain, wind, and constantly moving till 2200. Sunday eased up with a 0600 pull and finished the night 2330. This morning was a glorious 0500 wake up from the FBO couch for a 530 fueling, 0630 pull and got relieved at 0700. Now time to split wood for 8 hours!

I hear ya, and well done! I have days I miss the ramp... mostly during the summer.

I don't miss the winters of de-icing a jet with 40 kt winds, +SN, sitting on a swaying boom that's going back and forth 20' and I'm unable to see the ground due to visibility.

Always great stories and I'm sure my kids will hear them!

Bleh, I'm supposed to get trained on deicing soon, not looking forward to it. The bucket rocks back and forth like it wants to throw you out, when you push the lever to raise it it wants to rocket you to the moon, and everyone complains about having been stuck in it at some point. That and the guns both drip everywhere AND get stuck in the firing position. Too bad we all don't have that infrared deicing stuff.

And then there's trying to open the door to a CRJ from the ground when the FA's are standing there and you can't get it open. I'm not weak, it's frozen shut! ;)

Sometimes I miss the lawless days out on the contract ramp for DL. There's one video of two guys putting two tugs face to face bumper to bumper and flooring the throttles. Both of them started pointing up.

I do the Saab deicing, little cart, crappy spray...But also work for a deicing company on the field. Integrated Deicing, yellow trucks for you pilots. Anyhoo. If your just in the bucket, and not enclosed, I truely feel for you. We fortunately are enclosed in the boom, with a little heater. Its the most fun Ive had a job I think ever. Reminds me of the old game mechwarrior, except the guns are a set of nozzles and you shoot off frost, snow, etc.

Sounds nice! I'm sure one of the outstations will enjoy that truck in 25 years when it's outlived its useful life. ;) haha. Our deicing trucks are from 1980 I think. All of our beltloaders still have the AOA authorization stickers from DCA on them.

Is the cart you're talking about the little metal tower that's towed around by a bag tug? I saw one of those in the training video the other day... do not want.

Ok, FDX... GFK base vs DFW Base...

Does DFW really get that much icing a year? Some smart... uh... person at FDX bought a whole bunch of those enclosed de-icers. Well DFW got 6 of them, and GFK... the old boom truck from MOT. Really, who needs to be enclosed more... -40 F or 31F?

It was always nice to have a contract and be able to walk out at the end of the work day when was starting to hit the fan!

Sounds like the company I am gonna start working for in Anchorage when I get back.:)

The deicing cart on the ramp is prolly 4 ft by 4ft, plugs into the wall, and has a little 5 hp motor to give it pressure...they use it to deice the props on the saabs. They have tried to get me to do it, I did it once, but now decline because I dont want to have a conflict of interest between the two jobs. If I do it on the ramp, I get paid my 8.75 / hr, if they don't get the birdcatchers done, they goto the deicing pad, and get charge around $1-2k to do it.
