I got to get some time in a Focke Wulf FW-149D today! What a blast! GIO-550, 280 hp. +6/-3 G rated. Its such a unique and fun airplane to fly.

There used to be a few -149Ds around ATL with one at RYY. The guy wanted to sell it and I was looking for a unique machine at that time. Nice machine. It had been used by the Italians as an ab initio trainer and had some very good avionics. The cockpit is large enough to play touch football in... not super fast.

So, where did you fly it, what did you do and what were your impressions of it?

There's one here in eastern NC. I saw it at the Cherry Point MCAS air show and got to talking to the owner. He wanted tailwheel time so I swapped him out - an hour of dual in the Citabria for an hour in the FW. I liked the way it flew. The ailerons and elevator were light and responsive. The rudder required some leg strength. It climbs ok, not fast, but better than the Citabria. We did a few rolls and high G turns. You could tell it was a heavy airplane though. I forget what gross weight was, but I think I recall him saying gross was around 4000.

Overall, I liked it. I'm not sure I'd want to put fuel in it w/ a GIO-550 (280 hp). Its rare, only 19 left airworthy in the world, and that would be enough for me to want one.

We have one local that has been for sale off and on. Best bet is to locate it in Europe. I doubt that 19 airworthy ones is a good number though.
