Got mom out of Long Beach

Finally back after going to Long Island to dig mom out. The town is an entire wreck. Downed power lines, garbage all over, stores boarded up etc.The ocean and the bay met completely engulfing the area in four feet of water. A local volunteer fireman told me a house closer to the water had water up to his attic line. The local utilies company shut the gas off to the town. When they tried to turn the power back on in a small area they set two homes on fire due to the damaged electrical wires. We got word that several people in the area, including a 76 year old woman who drowned in her basement. When I was standing in line at the Salvation Army station for a cup of coffee it was sad to see all of the people walking around with stunned and confused expressions. I was running so much in and out of the house for 6 days carrying full garbage bags, furniture that I actually blew a bunch of small capillaries in my feet. I was working on a time limit due to sun setting early (remember, no lights) and I took vacation days to get her out of there. So, now she's safe with my wife and I in Ohio.

I threw out 3 loads like this from her house. The bull dozers would come by and just scoop it up and dump it. Next to the tree are my sister in law and mom. The cars in the drive way were completely under water.

This guy across the street just took the door off and left.

These boats as well as many others washed up a half mile in.

The streets were full of garbage. The bull dozers and trucks were picking up as much as possible.

This is so terribly sad. But what is wonderful, is that your Mom is alive and now safe. You're a good son. A very good son, and apparently you married the right woman too. I hope she got her clothes and the things that meant something for her out of there. Sending some well wishes for all of you. It will be great having her near and secure during the upcoming holidays. Well done.

That would be my nephews mother.
Clever Bill, clever. Its insane to see the damage around there. Glad you have her back in Cleveland with you. It at least gives her a warm and safe place to be until the CF in Long Island gets figured out. As you said it is still a mess out there. Good luck to all of you.

I happened to be looking through this forum today...the area still hasn't recovered. My parents are still displaced. The most difficult couple of days of my life, but my parents new house is getting built in a couple of days..

Oh by the way, I'm pretty sure those pictures are from Island Park and not Long Beach (haha).

Wow. I was suprised to see this at the top again. You're right. Island Park. But nobody knows where that is. I'll say Island Park. The response is where?. I'll say Long Beach. Oh..OK.

I was there last month to handle a few affairs. I drove by the house (Nassau Lane, if you're interested.) The landlord gutted it and did a complete remodel inside. Holy crap is it nice on the inside. This is what it looks like now...

There are still many homes that are abandoned there. Now the banks require flood insurance as part of the mortgage. I was happy to see all of my favorite pizza places are doing well. Jacks and DaVinci's on Long Beach Rd.

How did Billy's Beach Cafe turn out? That's another favorite place of mine.

Hmm I don't know Billy's beach cafe, and I've never been a big fan of jacks or davincis, I always preferred Dcoccos in oceanside. Peters Clam Bar is under new management (and not as good).

And flood insurance doesn't help...the entire insurance thing has been an absolute fiasco.
