what are some really good pilot skills you must have by the time you are a Commercial Airlines Pilot?

Ability to pass the tests!

And also, perhaps a good handle on that 'caps lock' key as well!

I should leave this to the airline guys. But just from jumpseating i seemed to notice that captains needed to have good "decision making". There is alot of times where the pilots get to the plane and find that there is a mechanical problem, an open write-up, overweight, etc. Thats when the CA has to make the call as for what actions to take.
 
If you're a Private or Student Pilot looking to earn his Commercial liscense, work on your basic stick and rudder. Hold yourself to 20 feet of altitude, not 100. Hold heading to 5 degrees, not 10. And unless you're doing a slip, crosswind landing, or flying on one engine, the ball NEVER leaves the cage, EVER. Even rolling out of a turn, stay coordinated.

This kind of thing you'll be tested on in your Commercial checkride in the dreaded 'eights' manuvers.

As for the airline guys, ask me in about 3 years.

Seriously,

Be able to make the right calls! Like said above, the captain does alot more than just fly the airplane.

PREFERRED PERSONAL TRAITS AND SKILLS
calm
alert
able to work long hours under pressure.
They need to have good technical and planning skills.
Good hearing
Good eyesight
Good reflexes
Good physical coordination.

The ability to be wrong....and not take it personally.
 
Multi tasking, and workload under stress

Some civilian pilots go through training and never get a huge stressload placed upon them. It is good to get to know what you can handkle under stress

that's a good skill for your non flying life too. Makes you mcuh easier to work with as well.
