Start at $34,185 - $45,295+ annually depending on qualifications
Two years experience in aviation, airport operations or pilot license. Requires knowledge of FAA Regulations pertaining to public use airport facilities and inspection procedures. sounds like a helluva summer job! I called the city of dallas aviation department over spring break and talked to quite possibly the dumbest person ever. I then gave up my aspirations to be a public servant :sarcasm: and try for employment elsewhere :)

Yeah, no problem... The funny part was that I was half-ass looking for a part time job as a page or something at the library.

Around here, you could make that as a bus boy in the right casino. But I want nothing to do with that industry. You make money but get treated like CRAP.

I was thinking the same thing but didn't have the nuts to say it first. Factor in retirement savings ($15k for 401k, $4k for IRA) insurance, etc. and the all time high cost of housing, you really need to be making around $70k to live a middle class lifestyle these days.

If you were fortunate enough to have bought a house 4-5 years ago, or live in a cheap area of the country, you might be able to get away with $50k/yr and still live a comfortable QOL. It looks like this job is a government job, so at least you'd have a pension...

I was seriously looking at becoming a cop. 20 years of service here and you retire with a pension 90% of your last 3-years average pay. I'd only be 44 then...

Funny you mention that. I met a 19 year old girl last month at VGT who was taking flight lessons to get her private. When I told her how much I made at year 4 of "professional" flying. She looked at me and goes "I make 36grand bussing tables at xyz casino, im not going to fly a plane for that little money. I made that much when I was 17". My furloughed buddy from Mesaba made more on unemployment than FO wages, and he just took a job that pays for his training and makes already double what he did as an FO, now only working 40 hours a week. Why are all pilots (myself included) retarded?

Dude, Ive been reading your posts for a while now and its like reading my own mind. I live like a peasant and I stash away every nickel I have into my roth and other retirement funds. I view my work as every hour I am away from home. I really appreciate you taking the time to break down the actual numbers (money/perdiem/actual work/hours away) of first year FO. I love to fly but Id also like to eat and not be living in my buddies extra room 10 years from now. I dont want to be a cop, but im exploring my options.

Sometimes I feel like I'm "living to work" vs. "working to live". It sucks. I long for the day when I can fully fund my own retirement while still living a good, fulfilling life. Unfortunately, I don't even think a regional CA's salary will satisfy that dream. If I had a significant other who made $50k+/yr I wouldn't be worried so much, but she makes half that and we both struggle to get ahead. It sucks categorizing going out to eat every two weeks at Wendy's or Chic-fil-a "splurging"...:mad:.
 
If someone wants a good paying aviation job, in about 6 months I will be looking to add an aviation buff that would like to learn how to recruit pilots, A&Ps, Aviation Engineers, or any other related aviation position for MROs, Corporations, and Manufactures.

Pay can range from $40K (okay, if this is all you made you won't last) to $150K+ per year. Realistic pay for an average person is $60K to $90K, above average is $90K to $135K... the best top $150K+ (and we have one person who been at this level ever single year since the first year in the business only 4 years ago... and I wish it was me!). Oh, and no, these are not commission based positions. We offer a base salary and bonuses and commission on top of a base salary (and the starting salary alone is much more than you would make at the Regionals even with a couple years under your belt). I do require at least a 4 year degree (any type) or equivilent work experience specifically in an aviation related position with a true interest in making more than $100K per year and a clear interest in bettering the lives of other aviation professionals through hard work.

We are aviation headhunters, i.e., are hired by companies to find the right person who has very specific credentials that the company can not source on their own through simply running adds and networking on their own. If you think you might have interest, I will begin accepting resumes November of 2006 (so remember me if this sounds interesting!).

I had a "headhunter" come talk in one of my business classes. Sounds interesting. And I could actually see doing that in the aviation world. I love "networking" with pilots.

With this position, Airport Operations Officer, you are either assigned to the airfield, landside or terminal. That's your area and you do the daily inspections per Part 139 & Part 1542. Rocket science it's not. Get's boring after awhile, however, for what you do the $$$$$ is good.

50K doesn't buy much anymore. Especially if you live on the coast, east or west. A HS dropout isn't going to get this position.
I missed the date for apps but I bet the basic requirement was a BS/BA in management, aviation management/admin or some aviation related field.

I am hoping to take a position in ops at a local airport. I will make substantially less than I do now in the medical field. However if flying doesn't work out in my future I would rather work around aviation in some form or fashion.
Money=happiness?

A lack of money greatly increases stress. I'd say that lends itself to unhappiness, having been there in the past :).
