Goldendoodle Advice.

So... does anyone have one?

We are on the verge of buying the first dog for our kids and I've heard nothing but great things about the Goldendoodle's from the internet and breeder's web pages.

My wife loves the fact that they are one of the most hypoallergenic breeds and shed little to no hair.

I love the fact that they have the temperament of a Golden Retriever in a much smaller size (We'd be looking at the "mediums" which grow to @ 45lbs).

Add in the fact that they seem very easily trainable and are great with kids... it seems a no brainer. Except... that they cost @ $1500-$2000.

Anyway... just seeing if anyone has any personal experience with these pups or their sister breed, the Labradoodle.

Sounds good and it would be a perfect fit for your family. Just be prepared to be branded gay for life for owning, and saying, Goldendoodle.

They are a beautiful, friendly, and active dog! Sweet as anything, these dogs love running around with you and are excellent with kids. I also love their counter-part breed, the Labradoodle.

Hey finally something on the forums i know a little about! I have a Goldendoodle that I got for Christmas two years ago (gift to myself). I cannot say enough good things about this dog breed and their personality. Very smart, very friendly, and they don't shed! With that said their coat takes a lot of maintenance with brushing very frequently as it matts pretty easily. Mine is a cross of a full size poodle and full size golden. She is very white but Doodles can come in black,white, golden, aprocot color. They are farily high energy and would need a good amoutn of excersise. As far as price I paid $1000 for mine. We have a black one. Great dog. Very smart, wants to please, very friendly, and easily trained. Ours does shed some, but way less than other dogs I've owned.

We paid a LOT less than you're talking about. I don't remember for sure, but I'm thinking $300? That was three years ago though - maybe the good aspects of the breed have driven the price up even more. :dunno:

Bottom line - highly recommend. If you get through GRR let me know and you can meet her.

They are a mix, so there is no guarantee on the type of hair they will have. Poodles are more hypo-allergenic/ shed free, but Goldens aren't. As far as personality, both are great, so you should be okay there.

There are so many great dogs in shelters that need good homes! We adopted our current lab-mix-mutt from a shelter in Tennessee, and she's the nicest dog I've ever met! We've never heard her bark except when she wants to come inside, and she was already house trained when we got her!

I was looking for the same qualities in a dog, medium size, good temperament, and clean. After a lot of research we came home from the ASPCA with our newest best friend. The only thing I'd say he might be too fond of is affection. He is 110% certain he needs to be with us at all times and follows us everywhere we go. He is as loyal as they get and absolutely loves to get crazy at dog beach.

The labradoodles I've come across while at dog beach have always been very high stung. (of course, this is a 100% anecdotal opinion) It seemed like their owners were having a tough time getting and keep their attention. One owner had a broken hand due to something or anther his dog did. Again though, this is just an experience I've seen with just a few, so it certainly doesn't cover the whole breed, just like opinions some have about American Pit Bull terriers and Staforshire terriers. Given a choice between a the 3 options I'd go for a strait up standard poodle if your dead set on something like that. I think Standards are in my top 5 for favorite dogs. They are sharp and have an ego to go along with their good personalities.

I'd say go to the local pound and find a lovable mutt. My parents have a spaniel/black lab/golden retriever mix who is the friendliest pooch you could ever meet. She sheds though.

Ask yourself, are you looking for a dog you can be "proud of" at the dog park when someone with a $3k designer dog compliments how good your $3k dog looks? Or are you looking for a family member? The reality is every time you go to a breeder a happy lovable mutt is put to sleep.

If you're worried about personality, a dog who is old enough to be adopted (or sold, if you go the breeder route) is old enough to give you the warning signs of personality issues. Look for a puppy who acts like the kind of dog you want. Shy and quiet, playful and fun, scared and aggressive, etc. 15 minutes on the floor with the puppy and a tennis ball will tell you everything you could hope to know.

Hey Bob...I agree; find a rescue pup or older, or a friend that had a litter recently. We have a new (well, turing a year old now, but for a Lab, still a pup) Yello Lab that the wife's uncle had in a litter and are happy as can be.

Okay, now the real reason I am posting here, as I know you'll be by this post: I went on to ATP's web site recently, and saw the "Mentor Pilot" program or whatever it is called. I saw the forums, and figured I would register and have "a little fun" with you.

Well, my plan back fired, as I never was able to log into the forums and I have had a guy from ATP calling me asking if I am still interested in learning to fly. I am going to call him when I get in, but for now, can you go on their forums or whomever you know at ATP and tell them that they can stop calling and wasting their time. I did not want to make an international call just to tell them I was not interested, but was trying to mess with the infamous Capt Bob!!

I got my German Shepard from a rescue. She's by far the most intelligent, stupid, happy, loving, obedient, loyal, protective dog I have ever owned. Rescues FTW!

When I say intelligent, she figures things out quickly, like wait (not stay), sit, go, lay down, etc. But she is still a clumsy puppy at 61 lbs (and she is skinny!)

My parents got a labradoodle 3 years ago and I can say its one of the worst dogs I have ever been around. They have trained the dog using various methods (Cesar, positive reinforcement, light shock), hired trainers, you name it they've done it. The dog barks at his shadow, tries to bite everyone and doesn't play well with other dogs. I've been bit several times while sleeping when I've been visiting.
I will say that it follows my mother around and instantly reacts to her every command. It's a smart dog for sure. Smart enough to know better and not give a damn.

+1 for rescues. A dog you save from being euthanized knows what you did, and the rewards are reaped 10 fold.

Nothing wrong with excess dog hair. I saved a ton of money on insualtion when my house was built. :rotfl:

Just put all the neighborhood dogs next to that insulation blower and PRESTO,18 inches of insulation in no time.

Nice choice! I love Goldendoodles! I have a mini schnauzer right now, but in a year or so I want to get another one and this time for sure a GD.

I already have the perfect name for it. Ready? Here it is....
