GoJet

Listen, there are very few people that actually have enough of a grudge against Mesa pilots to deny them jumpseats. Sure many Mesa pilots are a little annoying, especially when you're in a hotel van and you get to hear about how "that 900 is sweet, we get two FA's! And we're flying them out of USAir hubs now too but we have to be based in IAH so we don't bust USAir's scope directly!".

They're ALPA members and it wasn't too long ago that they were fighting against this very thing and SQUASHED it, albeit at a very high price. Sure you will run into Wisconsin pilots who are bitter about Mesa getting some of the old united routes, just like there will undoubtedly be some animosty at my company toward Chautauqua when/if they start flying out of CAL hubs. In the end those were all business decisions that had nothing to do with the pilots and it would be foolish to lay blame on one another for those decisions.

Mesa and Chautauqua, and to a lesser extent skywest are taking heat from other pilot groups for flying 70 and 90 seat jets for little more than the 50 seat wages.....but it's still nothing to the extent of GoJet.

The Gojet pilots, many of which quit TSA go to over, did directly make a decision to "leapfrog" the TSA seniority list.

GoJet is in a whole 'nother ballpark.

As much as everyone, myself included hates this place, it will not stop you from going to a major. Someone in the last Cal class was from Gojet. Figures people from UVSC went there. There are some of the worst pilots I have ever seen. By the way that webpage is scary. They even have there home addresses.

I understand the deal with GoJets.

What I want to know is why is Mesa viewed negatively and what other airlines are considered the same as Mesa?

My opinion:

Mesa is viewed negatively because of their contract, ie, no block or better, only 8 days off per bid period (28 days), J4Js, and I think the big one is the apparent, I say again, APPARENT, lack of experience that some crews may have seen from Mesa crews, ie the hard landing in ROA that bent the airplane (Go around is not an option).

A lot of the animosity comes from the fact that Mesa is not owned by UsAir or whomever else they contract for, so any flying they do is seen as taking jobs away from furloughed pilots and taking growth away from wholey owneds. Too me it is a big pissing contest, mine is better than yours argument. For years pilot groups have been living by the mantra of "best contract plus X%" and now that the chips are down management is using the same mentality for pay cuts, thus Mesa's contract is a sore spot for most.

Again, my opinion, your mileage may vary...

No offense intended at all Max, but when you get into the industry and see how it all really works, then you can call me on my opinion.

Like I said, not defending the pilots at all, but at the same time I don't pretend to have walked in another persons shoes either. GoJeters are not scabs, they don't deserve the title. The whole thing is perfectly legal, highly immoral and does the industry no good, but legal. Taking it out on people who need a job and maybe do not know any better is childish.

Please don't twist my argument into crossing the picket line and scabbing during a strike, two totally different situations, no work is struck, no one "lost" a job and no one was denied access to these jobs.

I have friends that fly for TSA and I feel for them and they are doing what needs to be done, but my argument lies with jumpseat wars, my opinion.

Cool,cool...but never said or thought they were scabs!

Thats pretty big of you Dugie. That shows a lot of restraint. I have a friend at TSA and it really pisses me off that Go-jets are around. My friend is getting screwed and is leaving TSA partly because of it. Leaving an airline is one of the hardest things to do in this industry, basically your taking a step back and starting all over.

GJ pilots at STL, get blocked, get starred down in their terminals, and from what I understand, when GJ pilots have to sit in the terminal, they hide their badge and sit in a corner. hoping no one will notice them. My friend sat at ORD for 5 hours to DH back to STL. He could have taken an earlier flight on GJ, but refused.

MLM, i would share what u have learned here toyour CFI friends. they might, hopefully, appreciate it and change their decision to fly ther. There are plenty of other airlines hiring.

MESA.....

Also someone mentioned Mesa catching crap. From my understanding, some of it has to do with Freedom Airlines, a Mesa alter ego carrier, back in tha day. They are partially the reason why Mesa pilots had to sign such a crappy contract. BOG, would know better, feel free to correct me if i am wrong.

Mesa catches crap because they have the worst contract, so other airline pilots think they are stealing their jobs. For example, an ACA/Indy guy might hate mesa because they picked up some United flying, thinking its because mesa underbid them. I am not saying its right or wrong, thats just the reasoning behind it.

That's a pretty lame thing to say scoobs.......What did myself or anyone from UVSC do to piss in your cherrios? It's pretty annoying to put a lot of effort into your training, only to be classified as "one of the worst pilots" merely by association with what in my opinion is a pretty decent flight school.

Mesa pay is not worse then most regionals. Why doesnt everyone have a grudge against Colgan, Great Lake, or PCL? They pay crap vs. SKYW, XJT, ASA, or AWAC.

Probably because Colgan, Great Lakes, and PCL aren't flying 90 seat aircraft with FO's who make 20,000/yr.

Anyone know if gojets makes you sign an employee contract saying you will stay for so long?

Don't know if there's a training contract, the pay is about the same as the TSA 50 seat pay from what I understand though.

The company is saving some serious cash though, because everyone at GoJet is at Year 1 pay, so even the captains are making something like 55/hr. That's embarassing for a 70 seat jet.

When are people going to realize... IT'S NOT ALL ABOUT PAY

Sure, their pay rates may not be top of the line (although many other regionals are now being forced to "align" their scales with Mesa) but it is mostly the fact that they treat their employees poorly and there is very few protections in the contract. For the most part, the Mesa crews I have seen are professional and competant. It is just that they are stuck with a contract (mostly from having to deal with getting Freedom back in house) that doesn't provide things like block or better, deadhead pay, cx pay, a large number of days off, no duty regs, no trip regs etc.

I may be wrong about a few of those things, but that is the over all issue.

A jump seat war isn't the answer. Not too long ago the Chautauqua Children got the entire airline temporarily removed from TSA JS List...

The problem with this industry is that someone is always willing to work for less and management is exploiting this. If they could, mgmt would hire kids right out of flight school because they would fly for 12 K / yr and are completely uninformed...The sad part is these kids think they were getting a good deal...

A lot is going to have to change before things get better. EVERYONE NEEDS TO START STANDING UP TO MGMT. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH ALREADY.

Mesa is simply THE industry scapegoat, nothing more nothing less. There was a case where one of our CA's denied a Mesa pilot a JS but then pushed with his flight case still in the cargo bin. WTF...that crap doesn't help anyone.

Probably because Colgate and Great Mistakes flies 19/34 seat turboprops, many of which are on government subsidized routes. Even Culligan, a non-union airline, has block or better, deadhead pay, MX and WX cancellation pay, and an absolute minimum of 10 days off.

There are some guys that cant say no to a Mesa, Colgan, or Great Lakes job. There are families and kids to feed. They arent some 21 year old CFI (no offense any 21 year old CFIs) with no mortgage, kids, health bills, ect to pay.

You can't feed families and kids on any first year FO pay let alone the ones you just listed.
