Going to Afganistan!!!

After joining the Navy Reserves in July of this year, they didn't take long to get me orders to Afganistan. 1 year "boots on the ground", extendable to 2 years.

I am having a baby next month too. Man this really sucks.

thats what happens when you join the military. They will get every possible thing they can out of you so do the same to them. Take advantage of your service and use every benefit and every grant you can possibly find.

Overseas is not too bad, I am sorry to hear about the timing though, that is a bummer.
 
The timing is horrible for you. Hope everything goes well with the birth of your child. Please know that we all appreciate your service to our country. Stay safe!
 
Thanks everyone. I am going to keep asking everyone where the sub base is at. Can't believe they are sending a squid to the desert.

My dad was a squid too - chief electrician on subs. He went to war too. Korea, and the end of WWII. He was, and still is, my hero. You will be your unborn child's hero too! :) Do you have to leave before the due date of your baby? I sure hope not!
 
Due date for baby is Nov 14th. I am being called up Nov 20th. I then go to Virginia for 2 weeks to process in. I return for a month during December. In January I go to training. What kind of training? "Army training Sir" for two months. I then come back home for 1 week and then at the end of Febuary I am off to war for a year. I should have an office type job since I am a Computer Information Technician. Maybe someone can give me some insight on what I may expect. And to think I left active duty because I didn't want to be away from home anymore with a new family. LOL

Will they give you an extension if your baby isn't born by Nov 20th? Maybe Coley can help you out with your questions since he's over there.

Ian served over there as well...maybe you can chat with him?

It sucks man. Ask for a delay of deployment for your child's birth. My unit did that for a few guys when we went to Iraq in '05.

Either way, keep your head down and your socks dry.

We never had a Navy guy work with us... pretty dang weird if you ask me.

:yeahthat::yeahthat::yeahthat: The Navy is trying to help the Army and Marines out and all ships, I believe, are sending one or two "volunteers" to be boots on the ground, augmenting the other branches.

It sounds like a terrible situation for all. Squids were not meant to be on the ground...we never trained for it and I can just imagine the resentment this would harbor upon returning to the ship and then "getting a free cruise, paid for by the US Government".
 
Yep...this is the way things are going. My Uncle is a commander down at Keesler AFB. One of the squadrons there trains BRAND NEW Airmen (yep Air Force dude and dudettes) on "Army type" activites (convoy duty, weapons usage, etc.). That is all they do. In my flying squadron, we ALWAYS have someone in my unit deployed to the sand box doing non-flying related duties...

Doesn't seem like rate means too much in the reserve. Units are getting called up for all kinds of duty. One of my friends is a LCDR from a reserve unit here in Florida, and they got called up last year to do some kind of joint operations, civil-affairs type duty in the Horn of Africa/Djibouti. They also got sent to an Army base for "additional" training before they left.
 
I don't know where I am going in Afghanistan nor what I will be doing but if anyone can give my wife and I any insight on what to expect I would appreciate it very much. Thanks

I was with one of the first units to go over there in 2002, so things are probably WAY different now. Back then it was all tents and plywood latrines. Now I'm sure living conditions are pretty good.

If you are going to be admin over there, you'll probably work on a secured base 99% of the time, live in a trailer with a bed and AC, eat pretty good chow, have internet, a gym, a PX, and an MWR area.

Guys with more recent experience can probably chime in with up to date info.
