Ok, here it is I tried to post this in your the captain forum but it wouldn't let me! If an administrator wants to move it please do.

You are coming in to KBKW shooting the ILS 19 Approach

You are East of the Airport being vectored in. It is 1/2 Mile and 100 Overcast. You are 99.9% sure you are not going to get in. As ATC vectors you on the Final Approach Course you see on your Radar a MASSIVE area of Level 4/5 T-Storms all around the area of the missed approach course/holding area. ATC also confirms this.

What would you do if you had to go missed?

Yes this did happen to me.

Ask ATC for alternate missed instructions, stating the reason you described above, if unable ask for holding over the marker or proceed to your alternate.

well........

  • you could try the approach.
  • go missed if needed
  • could request missed approach hold at any one of the other IAF's LAFOR, LEONE, or maybe RAINELLE since it is fartherst away from NUTTR
  • if all else fails, head for the alternate......
That's my $.02 worth from a 'slowly working on my commercial' self.... ;)

For me it would depend if that storm is stationary or moving. If it is moving to the east I would ask for delayed vectors to the final, maybe to the south and then back up the west side of the field behind the storm and then on to the Localizer. If it is mostly stationary or not moving to the east asking ATC for alternate missed or inform them that on the missed you would like to hold as published at LEONE. From the chart it looks like the missed approach turn will provide protection back around to the localizer. Also, seeing as it is Beckley I doubt there would be any traffic coming in behind you anyways.

Depends on the direction of the storms. If they are moving any direction other than east, ask for an ammended miss back to RNL and hold (fuel permitting). If the storm is moving east, request clearance to your alternate.

Correcto!

Kind of the unwritten rule when flying single-engine is to request 'alternate' MAP instructions in the event of a single-engine missed approach because you don't want to have to deal with turns, climbs, joining VOR radials to go hold at a VOR-VOR intersection fix when you've got degraded climb performance and a two sets of full hands.
