Going for the MEI

The Flight Instructor Airplane Multiengine rating is independent of the Flight Instructor Instrument Airplane and there's no requirement to do one before the other. However, if you get the Multiengine added to your instructor certificate first and later do the Instrument add-on in a single, your CFI certificate will state "Multiengine limited to VFR only" or something like that.
I have a CFII.

Can I choose to do MEI without instrument approach?

The CFI PTS doesn't require any instrument approaches for the multi engine add on so it's certainly possible. I had to look at the new PTS and the note about the VFR limitation isn't in either the airplane or instrument instructor PTS although you would need to discuss that with your examiner.

How much more is the school charging just so you can add single engine maneuvering by reference to instruments and one single engine instrument approach to the checkride?

Noted.

Make sense.

Thank you very much for answering my queries! :-) Knowledgeable!

I have CFI and CMEL. And I have questions about combination of MEI and AMES rating.:)

1. Can MEI and AMES be done together? If yes, do I have to pay one or two checkride fee?
2. What is the typical training hours for combination of MEI and AMES for a slow learner?

61.195(f) is the requirement that before you give dual instruction in a multi-engine airplane that you have at least 5 hours in the specific make and model.

61.183(j) states that you have to have 15 hours PIC in the category and class appropriate to the flight instructor rating sought.

Since there is no land or sea in the class on an instructor certificate you can combine the two and as long as you are rated for airplane multi-engine land and airplane multi-engine sea on your commercial certificate you can give instruction in both (provided you have 5 hours PIC in the specific make and model).

For some reason I remember that the 5 hour requirement only applies if that airplane requires a type. @TwoTwoLeft , wasn't that one of Denis M's stumpers for CFI applicants?

The 5 hours requirement is still make and model specific. But it only matters if you're providing instruction toward a certificate or rating and the CFI needs to be PIC.

That's what it was. I couldn't remember.

Type applies too, if it's applicable.

The only exceptions to the 5 hour rule would be any general instruction not for a rating, flight review, IPC, or instruction given in a twin towards an ATP. The ATP works, since there is no endorsement required from an authorized instructor to take the checkride.

Do you have 15 multi pic ?

Hello Terry,

I do not have 15 multi pic.

The airplane I will be flying should be an amphibious aircraft.

For the case of amphibian airplane, am I right to say while doing AMES training, it can be logged as PIC while sitting on the right doing MEI training?
