I agree most of us are in for some pain going forward. At FedEx I’ve had to deal with a downgrade and then we had reduced hours. It sucked, but at least I got myself squared away financially. Our hours are at least back, but who knows what the future holds. Thank goodness my wife works too.
I don’t know that I’ve ever felt comfortable in this industry for a stretch longer than six months or so. Just a byproduct of being in the 9/11 lost decade generation I guess.
These pilots that have a couple of airplanes, 911 GT3s, multiple houses, etc have a lifestyle that is unfathomable to me. I still love this career, but I will never be relaxed about it until the day I retire.

Spirit Airlines had reached a restructuring deal with its lenders, with an assumed jet fuel cost of $2.24/gallon in 2026, and $2.14/gallon in 2027.
But, last month jet fuel costs rose 101.34% to $4.51/gallon, resulting in its shutdown.

15 years down the tubes. Was a great ride while it lasted. Great crews, great attitudes, great schedules...will definitely miss it!
Nothing like being in your mid-50s and out on the street. Time to figure out what's next because, unfortunately, the answer isn't retirement as much as I'd like to just walk away.

They were in their second bankruptcy and haven’t turned a profit since 2019. The fuel prices just accelerated the demise, unfortunately.

I’m sorry man, I just can’t imagine.
If we ever start hiring at FedEx again (supposedly there are rumors of this summer), I’ll do whatever I can to get you an interview if you want.
I’m sure others at JC will do the same at their shops, I don’t imagine you’ll be on the street very long.

Oh, I agree the outlook was bleak, and there was not a single smoking gun that led to their demise. However, no business can survive or even tread water when the #2 line item doubles in less than a quarter.

Log into The Pilots Record Database (PRD) especially Spirit Guys. Sign in or create a login, REVIEW EVERY TAB FOR ACCURACY! When PRD was new Spirit was listing a lot of PIC training events as SIC. If there is something that isn't accurate submit for a correction. I don't know how long someone will be in the training office taking care of records, so the sooner the better to review this information before it's too late.

The final nail in the coffin for Spirit was the fuel. That being said most of the blame imo falls directly onto Ted Christie. He was vocally against the merger with JB, told the judge in the trial that Spirit would be fine financially without the merger (even though at that point we hadn't turned a profit in years). All the while he was building his brand new HQ campus in FLL. Sure the engine issues didn't help and the fuel was the final nail, but he didn't seem to have much interest in running a profitable airline so much as taking as much money as he could while he was CEO.

We've taken in a lot of Spirit guys here at AA and allegedly even before the shutdown, you guys were unofficially "preferred" by recruiting. I do know we don't have any classes officially scheduled for the rest of the year and things are volatile, but interviews are continuing and I've unofficially heard we may resume classes after a previously scheduled pause over the summer a month early in July vs the previous August estimate.

Is the current situation better than a merger a couple of years ago? I won't pretend to know but it's 5/5/26 and here we are. You'll say it's Trumps fault because in your head everything is Trumps fault all of the time everytime no matter what. I think Spirit was running on a horrible business plan and they flopped. It's the fault of the folks that were running the airline that a jump in fuel prices sunk them, other US airlines haven't closed their doors. Not to mention constantly being featured in online videos with angry customers due to the pricing didn't help. A Spirit flight was the same price as a competitors price but if you didn't read the fine print you'd end up paying for your bag or your boarding pass at the gate. Was it deceptive advertising? Maybe, but every consumer should do their own due diligence. I feel bad for the employees and I hope they find gainful employment elsewhere. Go to SouthWest and flourish.
