Go Pro + F18 = Jealousy

Home!

Looks like they took off from Whidbey Island NAS and headed out east to the Roosevelt or Okanogan MOAs.

Yeah, I feel like less than a pilot suddenly... shoulda coulda woulda.

It's only an F/A-18.....dime a dozen jet just like the F-16.

Now, if it were something rare like say .....a stealth. Or something A-prefix that did some worthy work.......... :) :)

(mines laid)

I love watching Navy cockpit vids though, as it reminds me how I used to always get yelled at in the AF flying tac jets; flying with my sleeves up, no gloves, and mask hanging everywhere but the terminal area and during employment. Legal in the USN but not so much in the USAF. :)

Haha! Remind me to tell you about the day the visiting Congressperson and staff came to our base to visit, to our squadron to see the Hog....kind of last minute, and the SQ commander couldn't find ANYONE else to be squadron rep because everyone else was off/leave/flying/ or otherwise tasked. I'm working in Sq scheduling. "Daftarian, is there ANYONE else around available? Anyone?? Anyone at all???"

Thats what happens when you are labled as that guy who should be kept in a glass container that says "break glass in case of war".

Fixed it for ya.

Technically speaking, mask is required for us too from t/o to landing per opnav. A lot of guys pop them off for admin transit, but it's just as illegal for us as it was for you.

Oh yeah.....jet that the video was taken in is an EA-18G just for the record.

Good video. How about the sleeves/gloves thing? I believe it's optional in the USN, but in the USAF it's requires to have sleeves down (even when not flying....too many REMFs complaining) and the gloves technically were required for engine start/T.O./Landing; but everyone expects them worn all the time. So, me being me, I always have sleeves up and don't bother with gloves.....except for now in helos with doors off and it's cold. But that's the only time. At least in helos now, no more G-suit or mask. Gloves in the jet just didn't allow for much dexterity.

I think per the regs (and I would have to double check this), we are supposed to have sleeves down/gloves on. I always roll my sleeves down prior to walking, and I think most other guys do as well. As for gloves, I guess it just comes down to personal preference. Again, lots of guys don't wear them (myself included).....agree with you on the dexterity....some folks have the NAVAIR approved fingerless gloves however, which are probably better. I'm not really sure what the point of gloves is if you don't have fingers on them though....

^ are you guys allowed to use go pros for personal vids?

In my day we weren't allowed to have handheld or mounted recording devices of any kind, due to a few accidents with them. Only if they were issued to us for the particular mission.

One accident was in AZ. T-37 pilot filming himself cruising low-level down the Gila River east of Florence and in-between two buttes...one of which he impacted. Wreckage still on site there to this day.

Things may have changed though regs-wise.

It's normally squadron/typewing/CAG dependant. Never ok in the training command, at least officially. Fleet/operational units are a little different, and there is a little bit more leeway there. I know a number of guys who fly with gopros and use them during lower tasking portions of flights. Mike brings up a good point, and many folks are of the opinion that nothing good ever happens when cameras are around (I kind of agree with this though I enjoy seeing what others have filmed).

So...we're watching an NFO all day in the video? :)

And good work with the Flanker representation on the VFC bird.

haha very perceptive for an AF guy :) Yeah, the Omars have cool looking jets. I got into a 6 plane (4 of us blue, 2 of their red air) merge with them that went to hell in a handbasket pretty quickly......I pretty much just stayed in my block and watched while both the div lead and section lead (plus a classmatte of mine who just didn't want to go blind on -3) dove down to savage the section of Omars. Probably the most confusing swirl of jets I've ever seen, and I had the best vantage point of anyone. The paint was definitely helpful that day. I think the coolest adversary paint jobs are the ones the Nellis Eagles wear. I quite literally thought it was a Flanker landing at NKX before I got a better view on landing roll-out (complete with homo airbraking/Eagle wheelie)
