Go paper airplane, GO!

The Christmas before last, my Mom bought me a "Paper Airplane 2008 Desk Calendar." Every day of the year is a new paper airplane to fold and fly. I didn't use it, since I don't have a desk. Now that we live on the 36th floor in downtown Chicago, my girlfriend thought that we should take it home from my parents house and throw the planes out the window.

We built paper airplanes one day when we were bored, and they didn't do much. Basically the wind caught them and they fell to the ground.

Well the first one we made today, it sure didn't fall to the ground. It caught the wind (maybe thermals too?) and started flying across the city. So far in fact, we lost sight of it... After it had flown about 3/4 of a mile. When we lost sight of it, it wasn't losing altitude, but staying right at about 500 feet AGL! I'm curious now where it will finally land. Maybe MDW, since it was heading in that direction.

We've launched five more since then, and four went tumbling to the ground... One took off the opposite direction than the previous one. Maybe it'll end up at Wrigley.

I think I'll have to get some beer later, it might make this even more fun. :rawk:

haha that is awesome. I used to take part in such shenanigans when I used to live back in NYC on 23rd floor. And of course with Beer any activity becomes fun. :)

LOL!! I used to do that as well when I was a little boy, from the 16th floor in my old apartment building in Brooklyn. :insane:

Memories :D

We threw another one that went only about 3-4 blocks, but it appeared to get up to something like 30 MPH.

"Tonight, on news at 11...

Paper airplanes, falling from the sky. One even reported to land on a taxiway at Chicago's Midway Airport. Where are they coming from? More at 11"

You ever have one of those balsa wood planes with the rubber-band driven prop?

Those where cool too!

Are the pilots of the paper airplanes unionized with proper representation?

I don't know what kind of airline you think you're running up on the 36th floor, but the calendar airplane pilots don't like it.

:yup:
:rotfl:

Pfft, you have shiny paper airplane syndrome. I'm still flying my notebook paper airplanes out of my windows to build more valuable experience.

;)

When I was in college all the engineering students used to sit at the very top section of our basketball arena and launch paper airplanes down towards the court. If the plane made it on to the floor it normally got a round of applause.
