Go Blue!

michigan tech is way to far up in BFE, and UM has a better engineering program (in general) than tech. Also, more opportunity to socialize with the females at Michigan, other programs if he should change his mind about engineering (ala, me) etc.

Yeah I wouldn't be too interested in going to Tech, or Northern...or Central....or pretty much any school north of Lansing to tell you the truth. Michigan is already cold enough, and I thought going to school on the west side of Michigan Was bad. I couldn't imagine having to deal with Marquette or Houghton/Hancock in the middle of February.

And as Emily said, if he changes his major then he's hosed if he goes to a strictly engineering school. I went to Western Michigan University to study aviation, and ended up studying TheShortOne and obtaining a degree in philosophy, both of which have served me quite well thus far.

I liked Tech for the Winters. If you like winter sports, its the place to be! I liked the smaller school also. I just went home for the weekend every now and again to get warm.

I understand about if you need to change your studies, but if you want Engineering its a great choice.

I looked at Purdue and UM also, decided on Tech for multiple reasons, the biggest was the combo degree I wanted.

Kevin's son will have fun at UM, just has to remember to study!

Luckily he is a studier and, unlike his old man, actually likes school.

He wants a big school because he is a drummer on his high school drum-line and wants to continue that in college. That's why Michigan & Illinois are high on the list, they are both great engineering schools with Big-Ten big-time marching bands...

Kevin

Drumline? Michigan? No one around this site's got any experience with THAT! :) :sarcasm: *cough* jtrain...

congrats! i am a (ME) student at UH, 3000 level, tuff stuff my only friends now are my books and the guys who work at the coffee shop

Hail to the Victors :)

Congrats on him getting into UM. Its a very good school and a cool area.

I lived in Ann Arbor for 7 years and it was a blast!

Very Very Liberal though. :(

Were the Boilermakers a consideration?

I went to WESTERN Michigan University, another large (30,000 kids large) university on the other side of the state that nobody has heard of because they're in the MAC conference.

I did four years of college marching band playing snare drum, the last one as section leader. I also spent a year doing indoor drumline at the PIW level at Great Lakes Percussion. I loved it to death, and I was glad I had the oppertunities I did.

But tell him if he wants to be in a good college drumline, he's gotta go to Michigan State. Michigan and Illinois are, in my opinion, a bunch of hacks. :) Tell him to man up and audition at Cavies or if he wants, I'll put him in touch with the right people at Great Lakes Percussion (an ensemble I assure you he'd love).

Great news for the fam! Congrats Kevin. Sounds like he's gonna end up happy and have a good time. I just hope he enjoys aero more than I did. It paled in comparison to actually flying (although I did love propulsion and design classes), but getting that degree will be a wonderful thing. Best of luck to him.
