Are you an independent dispatch company available to any company willing to pay for your service vs working for one operator ? Air carrier only ? Corporate too ? I can't figure it out from what you describe. At least you get to live in a nice part of the country.

Nice part of the country ???? Puh leeeze !

I lived on that worthless peninsula for almost 20 years.....and here is what I experienced....

Endless, intense, inescapable, unbearable humidity, insect infestations with the bugs often large enough to carry off small children, boring terrain ( flat as a card table ), two seasons ( hot and wet & warm and wet )...plus the insane tropical storms that are violent enough to smash cities !!!

An economy designed for wealthy investors or business owners......good luck if you have to support yourself with wages...other than subsistence agriculture ( unless you own the plantation ) you have only the FIRE sector to have a ( barely ) lower middle class life ( and at that, expect to have a part time job to supplement your full time job )......anything else and say HELLLOOO poverty !!!

Culture consisting mostly of truck pulls and tailgate parties....

Taxes....oh yeah !....the much vaunted ( NO STATE INCOME TAX !!! ) Let me tell you how that works......you do save about 2K per year....and the employers balance that out by paying you 10K less a year than you would make anywhere else in the U.S. so really....you end up 8K in the hole in real terms.....Because as they would say in interviews...." We'll hire you...but you have to take half your pay in Sunshine...YUK YUK YUK "........I was a working nurse and was paid about 10K less in the Tampa Bay area than I would have made in an identical position in say...Atlanta. Plus, the government makes up for no state income with some of the highest property taxes you will see outside of Long Island.....

So yeah, take the kid to Orlando to see Mickey......but please, spare yourself....Don't live there !!!

So....how do you REALLY feel??? Lol...

For those interested, here's my experience. I make more money here than I did at my last 121 gig, which was just outside of Chicago. My rent is less here. I have ONE job and after bills I'm able to and put money away each check.

Granted, the summers are hot and humid. But I also live five minutes from one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen and spend much of my time off in the water, which is where I love to be. The winter has been absolutely wonderful and makes up for the heat and humidity of summer.

They do grow big bugs here but during the worst of summer, I never had more than a few bites at a time. They're just mosquito bites...

As a pilot, I love flying here locally. The view from my little 172 is unparalleled when it comes to being around water. Let's just say the greens and blues of the gulf far exceed the view of Lake Michigan from the cockpit. Now the PNW (home) is a whole other story and those views are amazing. On the plus side, I don't have to deal with mountain wave activity here or mountainous terrain. Lol...

No state tax is quite nice and actually looking forward to doing my taxes this year! Personally I don't feel the hit of no state tax...

My major complaint - no changes of seasons. I do miss the seasons. Even the snow :-)

Bottom line, it's all relative. What one person may despise, another may love. There will always be something about where you live that you wish were different or don't particularly care for, but I'm a firm believer in making the best of our situation. And I choose to be here. I'm happy with my choice. Sarasota is gorgeous.

Yeah.....Tell you what......Live there for a decade, THEN tell me what you think....

A pity you were the first to answer this post because you are a gracious and helpful person and I don't wish to engage you in an antagonistic manner.

I haven't even gotten into the violent crime and corruption that is endemic. Plus the traffic with impaired octogenarians and the unbelievable amount of drunks on the inadequate and heavily congested roads.

Again, you will learn that the scenery neither feeds you nor keeps you safe.

My view, Florida is a fine place for the government to resume above ground nuclear testing !!!

I was stationed in North Florida for a year plus spent time at Sheffield for my license - I tend to view it as a nice place to visit but I don't miss living there. The beaches are pretty though. Were I water/beach nut I'd probably have liked it better. I tend to enjoy California more, but I'm a mountain kind of guy more than a beach one. Still, it's a nice place to escape to in the middle of winter here for a few days...

Lol.... Well I thank you for choosing to not engage me in an antagonistic manner. I do remember how that goes with you... Haha... :-)

I will definitely agree with the impaired octogenarians comment. They do make commuting interesting. Thank God the snowbirds are only here 5-6 months out of the year. I'm already ready for them to leave. Lol

Again, we do have a choice in how we view our living situations. There is so much that I love about here and a handful of things I do not. I've had that everywhere I've lived tho, both stateside and overseas. It is possible to focus on the good parts and not let the less than good consume us.

;-)

I respectfully disagree.....If we do not develop outrage at the "less than good", there will never be improvements.....the contented by and large do not improve the quality of life.....the angry and dispossessed so often do.

Florida's manifest defects are papered over by the occasionally lovely scenery. I have a stake in that because of the very large portion of my life I spent there. Perhaps my insights will advise others to beware. Awareness leads to change.

Again, Florida is the Haiti of the U.S. Don't be deceived by white sand beaches......the state is vastly, vastly more than that.......and infinitely worse.

And so I'm grateful to be an individual with free will to develop my own views & opinions, and make appropriate choices for my own life...

My list of likes and dislikes may ultimately flip and my dislikes may end up outweighing the good...in that case, I'll make a rational decision at that time which may include a move to somewhere more desirable to me. In the meantime, I'm gonna enjoy this place! I imagine there are a lot of worse places to live and work in this country.

Can you tell I'm a "glass half full" person? Lol

You are young......I, on the other hand am a fossil !!! And very, very cynical......

Thank you for not taking the conversation in the direction of......" Well ! Don't YOU have a bad attitude ! "

That argument is always used to demonize those who point out uncomfortable truths.

So you can just imagine what I was like to management when I was a union rep !! LOL

Lol... I can only imagine!! Yeah, I don't see a purpose in getting nasty with someone over their opinions.

Halfway to 41...wow, is that young??? Thanks! ;-)

Yes that is still young..lol...Well I have a brother who lives in the Ft Myers area of Florida I love it there. Granted I don't live there but if I could find a job that paid decent I would move there in a heartbeat. Me much like yourself I love the water and the beach. As far as bugs and humidity try living where I am (Memphis). LTDXER might hate Florida but I can bet he has never lived in Memphis the REAL HAITI of the US...You have the right attitude Womanpilot it's all what you make it..The only reason I am still in MEM (other than the job) is my awesome friends I have here I wouldn't trade them for the world.

Ha! When I said there are worse places to live in the US, I was actually thinking of MEM. lol... Thanks FX ;-)

FWIW, I found a great paying job down there six months ago, got myself a 25% raise and am now enjoying the lack of state income tax.

Most of the reasons you listed about why you despise Florida are the same reasons I have wanted to leave IL for years..with the obvious difference being that in IL you bake in the summer but freeze in the winter. It's the worst of both worlds!

Also I'm wondering where do you live now? It would be pretty funny if you said IL...
