Getting the ratings

Lets say you get the pvt in a single, then do the instrument in a twin. Does one checkride now mean you are a ppl ASEL AMEL and can fly instruments only in the twin?

If you want to do this, I would suggest getting the private single, private multi, then the instrument rating in the twin. This would allow you to log PIC time during instrument training.

If you do your instrument rating in a twin, you also have instrument privledges in the single. If you do your instrument in the single, you have to do a single engine approach in the twin to get instrument privledges in the multi.

If you already have an instrument rating in the single, and add a multi rating, it is my understanding that the FAA is now requiring you to prove instrument competency in the twin, but I have not seen this in writing anywhere.

I don't believe you can do your Instrument Checkride in the twin without a Multi-Engine Rating (unless you are doing a "Combo Ride" in which you are going to demonstrate your PTS Required Items to add a Multi-Engine Rating to your Certificate at which time the Multi-Engine items would need to be demonstrated prior to the Instrument items, in essence completing your Multi-Engine Rating prior to your Instrument Rating). The Instrument Rating is just that, a rating... Ratings only apply to the class of Certificate you hold... i.e. you only hold a Private Pilot, Single Engine Land Certificate, the Instrument Rating would only apply to your Private Pilot, Single Engine Land...

Basically a "Rating Checkride" cannot upgrade your Certificate standing... (And for those who are going to say they got their ATP when they got their first Type Rating, those are combo rides...)

Hope this helps...
