Hey guys,

I will be attending UND in the fall and since im a southern california kid, I have no idea what i'm gonna need in order to brave the cold weather. I know im gonna need a lot of warm/expensive stuff, but in your experiences, what has worked for you guys??? What do you all recommend???

Thanx a lot guys for your help!

peace,

Bauer

wait till you get up here and buy a parka/winter jacket here...

maybe invest in a couple more longsleeve shirts or light sweaters (remember, you still have to sit in heated buildings for class)

gloves are great, but yeah prolly just wait till you get here

and stock up on video games or dvd's, because youll be sitting inside for 6 months of the year. :-\

What part of SoCal are you from? San Diego here - University Heights neighborhood.

I was scared about the cold before I moved here but it really isn't that bad. Just dress for the weather, ie get a jacket from Cabela's (zero tax on clothing since it's on the Minnesota side of Grand Forks) along with warm mittens/gloves and beanie. If you buy a jacket in SoCal you'll pay a lot more money than if you were to buy it here because winter jackets in SoCal are bought once in a while for people who want them for going up to the snow (Big Bear, Tahoe, etc).

Are you bringing a car? I'd recommend getting a winter/tire package for the snow, that's what I did. Engine block heater is a good idea if it'll be parked outside.

Dress in layers. Thats the biggest thing. Cabella's is a good bet, as are Carharts (brands) Just ask the locals. They will steer you right.
I lived in the midwest for 25 years and spent a winter or two in ND (NoDak).

i went to winnipeg and bought a bunch of cold weather gear at MEC. then again, 6 years ago, the canadian dollar was worth about $.65 US and buying anything in canada was a steal. probably best to buy at cabela's in EGF these days.

scheel's has TONS of good jackets too. a little less 'woodsy' too. if you care about that sort of thing.

Well, you will for sure see a lot of these when you come to North Dakota...

*shakes head* its as bad (or worse!) as NASCAR jackets in the south. :-\

though per capita, you see far far FAR fewer nascar jackets back home.

HAHA, well what's worse is seeing a snowmobile jacket AND a Dale Earnhart /NASCAR hat worn at the same time. LOL

Hey I see some of those here in New Hampshire too! Ski-Doo yellow/black seems to be more popular than the Arctic Cat Green ones.

This is far worse than an Arctic Cat jacket. If anyone in this forum were to dress like this you should come over to my place to collect on an old fashioned woodshed beating then i would proceed to run you over with my Arctic Cat and my Stock Car 73 times.

I guess I'd have to agree. If there's one thing I cant stand more, its the whole rap/gangster/ghetto way of talking and dressing.

I don't think anyone dresses like that where I'm from, although I have seen some baggy sagging pants and XXXXL shirts with a wallet chain here in Grand Forks.
