Geared turbofan

Lufthansa is running this engine on it's 320neos. They are getting about 15% fuel improvements out of it. There are some bearing and oil pump issues currently but I'd guess they get those worked out soon. The GE LEAPX uses a similar technology but apparently doesn't (as of now anyway) get the same level of fuel savings.

I was impressed with the noise reduction...not sure if it'll actually be 75%, but even 50%, dang!

LH only has a single A320NEO and they have already postponed all future deliveries until the engine fix is approved and installed. The single one in the fleet I believe is only flying domestically.

Qatar rejected all of theirs until the fix was installed and I have heard indigo may be delaying theirs as well.

The LeapX is nearly on par but is currently missing specs by a few % right this moment but should be improved soon.

In 1970 Garrett engineers took the APU from a DC-10 and put a geared fan on it and eventually it became the TFE-731. It's great that they can make such great leaps in efficiency and noise reduction, I just wonder why it took so long.

That's what we were told also when I went to school for a 731 powered airplane.

The type certificate for the engine I'm currently flying has changed hands a couple times, which also changed the engine designation. As a result it has been described as Caitlin Jenner. It was born and known as Bruce and is now known as Caitlin.

I mean...this is essentially just a ducted turboprop. What I want to know is when I can start counting PT6 time as "jet time." ;) Snark aside, this is some absolutely amazing technology - good old Pratt! Always pushing the boundaries of what I thought was possible. A 15% reduction in fuel burn is the difference between being profitable or not. That's amazing!

LH has two 320neos that theyre only using domestically. But as of a few days ago, they're ready to take more. Seems the engine issues are being worked out at an alarming speed.
