Gate tourism

I get it. Gone are the days of standing in the window and watching your loved ones pushing off the gate and waving as they taxi out. And as a kid that loved airplanes it was such a wonderful experience to get to go to the airport and do such a thing.

But today? I’m not sure this is a great idea. Strictly from a, the airport and gate areas are already congested enough standpoint. And now we’re going to have families staying around waiting for their people to leave? Not to mention parking and traffic problems getting in and out of the airport.

I just don’t see how this is a good thing. And I doing mean from a security theater standpoint.

Gotta drive up sales of those $8 sodas and $21 turkey sandwiches. I blame the Hudson News lobbyists for this change. But as already mentioned - the gatehouses are already overcrowded as it is,so let’s add more people to the mix.

I think I said in another thread, "either the security is good enough or it is not" - I suspect that this will prove that it is not? But, also, I would welcome the return of this.

What will happen though is it's going to be annoying when people are sobbing as grandma gets on the plane.

Mm the regional gates. This could be fun

I'm old enough to remember when they opened the new (old) PIT midfield terminal with the "Air Mall" they validated parking and encouraged Moon Township residents to come shop there.

i can recall taking my now 28yr old to the airport to watch planes. it is a great memory. we’d go watch planes grab lunch and find the cool places in the terminal. agree thought he crowds of today are bad enough now that it doesn’t make sense.

When I was in college right before 9/11 I was flying from the east coast to LA with a layover in BNA, my hometown. The dog we’d had since I was 10 was on its last legs and my mom said “I’ll bring the dog to your gate so you can see her one last time”. I was like “under no circumstances should you do that” because it was this decrepit old one-eyed psycho Boston Terrier that was aggressive because it was mostly blind.

Of course I got off the plane and she had somehow gotten this little yapping catastrophe into a crate big enough for a Great Dane, loaded it on a Smarte Carte, and finagled her way through security. I have never been more embarrassed than walking out of that jetway to frantic barking and her explaining that “he just wants to see his puppy!!” Thanks mom.

For that reason I strongly oppose untivketed persons at the gate.

I can't say I'm a fan because all we need are more people that are coming through security with no intention on flying and probably haven't thought about their keys, their pocket knife, spare change and really aren't prepared to be screened.

And I live in a state with a very large population of families sending their kids off for 24 months. So when one comes home, there are probably 20-30 people waiting outside of security for their family member and sometimes it's hard circumnavigating that crowd. I can only imagine them inside security.

Exiting SLC customs is always a treat. No, I don’t need to be cheered for doing my jerb and bringing your kid back home.
