Gas Prices again? (Oil prices/politics)

So I have a friend in class at ASA and she was told that several folks interviewed last week and were told, "did very well , even in the Sims, but they told them due to gas prices that we can't hire them. They didn't even say that they are in a pool, just sent them home."

I guess this is just the norm for the industry, I'm just glad I haven't applied to only regionals but have spread to freight, regionals, and GA 135 operations.

I hope no one gets the short end of the stick that just got hired in the past few months!

i would guess if they really did that great during the interview, they would be put in the pool and be the first ones called once they need to fill a class. although that may just make too much sense. honestly, does it really matter? until youre in class, youre not really hired anyway, right?

Yeah, that makes sense, and even then, once your in class your job might not be that secure either. HAd a buddy who was in class for Mesa and got let go halfway through class a couple of years back.

Aviation jobs are never really safer. As you get seniority security gets better unless the airline tanks (Pan Am, Eastern etc)

This isn't the last we will see of this. All the hiring for new rest rules won't matter when no one can afforrd to put gas in their planes.

Cargo is a leading indicator. Cargo hit the dumps before everything else, and started picking up before everything else. If Sierra West, Flight Express, etc start to put pilots on the street, dump any stock you own. As others have written, $4+ gas (not to mention the price of other commodaties), will cause most of the transportation industry to tank.

Which is exactly why we need some kind of regulation of whats going on with fuel prices. The world economy is based on transportation. If fuel prices hit the roof, what is it going to do to the world economy, again.

I am prediciting 2008 all over again. High prices all sumer followed by huge price drops caused by complete meltdown of global economy. I find it unnerving that even the head of the Saudi's is saying oil prices are unjustifiably high. They are already seeing a noticable drop in U.S. consumption and that is starting to worry everyone.

I didn't hear them say this. What I did hear was that 800,000 fewer barrels of oil per day are being produced in SA bc they think the market is already over supplied.

I haven't heard that one. We just had a new-hire class start this week again. But of course, things in this industry can chnage on a daily basis.

I thought you were a capitalist?

|I don't know if it is true or not, I just spoke to a contact who is in class and she passed along this information. I had sent in a resume and got a not thanks letter back yesterday. It was due to my multi time but I was led to believe that it might not be a problem.

I agree with this statement, I understand that our economy is based in part on supply and demand but I would think that this can be taken advantage of. The last time around it was inflation in futures of oil, so I thought. So what is causing gas prices to go up now??

A couple of months ago it was the excuse of unrest in the ME region. Now things are getting quiet but what is actually going on in Libya, Egypt, and Bahrain lately? We are worried about Libya so much that prices shot up when we got involved yet Libya exports a small amount compared to the rest of the gulf states. I wonder what the big deal is.

Man, I was hoping to come home soon, thanks for the positive briefing. :sarcasm:

I tend not to label myself as anything. I try and avoid political parties and socialist/capitalist labels because I disagree with anything that I feel will hurt the nation as w whole.

So I guess that makes me an independent if you have to attach a label.

If it makes you feel better, the heavy side of the freight industry is balls to the wall. We don't have enough lift, as opposed the first quarter of '08 when we carried about a billion gallons of sailboat fuel.
