Garmin SL30

Has anyone had experience with these nav/comm radios? I am really close to buying one and would like to hear the good and bad on this unit.

Thanks

Have one in my airplane and love it. Great range and reception, will ID VOR/ LOC, only thing I can complain about is the fact that the display only displays COMM or NAV info individually, but not both simultaneously. You get used to it, but it'd be nice if you could see both at a glance.

Can't say enough good things about this nav/com...however look for the apollo slimline before it was bought by garmin. Same exact thing but cheaper.

add one more positive for the SL30. I loved using the slim 30 in the arrow i did my training in. Patrick covered it well. It's a very capable unit, though much more than just a simple nav\comm. Nice features are that you can monitor the standby freq(which cuts out if ATC chirps in on the primary), which is great when you need to pickup ATIS but still need use comm 1. To\From with radials and a little CDI built into the unit.

Upgrading my airplane btw?

Yep, getting the Tater ready for you.

Got an appointment on the 22'nd for the install. It's going to replace a Collins 251/351 that has become unreliable.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I flew a plane before and after the SL30 install. We had problems for awhile right out of the shop because of the antennae and (I think) the cable. The long and short was that the antennae (maybe the cable, too) had to be replaced.

Thanks Deadstick. Once you got the bugs worked out did it perform well?

It was great. Right now I cannot remember whether the audiopanel (SL-15) was replaced during the installation, but that can make a big difference.
