Ok, so the way I read the info at Garmin is that Garmin Pilot can be loaded on to basically as many devices as you'd wish to have it on, but it will only work on 2 devices at a time?

Does ForeFlight work the same way?
 
That's why I have both! Though I must admit, I don't really use the Garmin app much, I prefer ForeFlight.

Your Foreflight subscription (depending on which you have) allows you up to two devices to load it on. In my case, I have it on the iPad and phone. If I wanted a third device, I would need to buy a license for it.

At least that's how it was a year ago when I bought it.

Which ever one you can convince someone else to pay for.

Wasn't quite the question. Someone else is paying for it and I'm pretty sure we are going Garmin Pilot.

Just trying to get the best setup I can.

We have 2 pilots. Trying to determine the best way to spend the money.

Two iPads are a must for backup purposes. However, since we have 2 pilots, it's going to be a royal pain to keep the iPads in the plane and keep them updated.

I'm thinking about either:

A.) Owner springs for 4 shiny new iPads and 2 user subscriptions..

Or

B.) Owner springs for 2 shiny new iPads and 1 subscription and each pilot keeps one of the shiny new iPads with a backup on his personal device.

Garmin is 1/2 the price of Foreflight, so 2 subs is kind of a moot point.

Data plan can be shared across all units and will most likely only be used for filing and the occasional "out of wifi" update.

Ideally, I'd like each of us to have an iPad so it can be setup how we are used to it, muscle memory and all that. Grabbing someone else's iPad and trying to use it quickly is a pain.

the 1-pilot ForeFlight subscription can be used on 2 iPads (one intended as a backup), and an iPhone and an iPod Touch.
 
I personally think that the two value adds to Garmin are the cost relative to ForeFlight (pretty small in the grand scheme) and the fact that it's interoperable with certain Garmin avionics stacks. I'd go Garmin if I were flying a GTN-650 and had the ability to move the expected flight plan into the airplane brains efficiently vice hand jamming.

You can add a third (actually a second - the price differential is pretty inconsequential) . Garmin tends to follow the same logic in all of their offerings. The fact that getting around Pilot is similar to getting around a GTN helps those who don't find much about this stuff intuitive. I noticed this the first time I flew with a 430 after using their handhelds. I know the similarities might not be as obvious to others, but the assist it can provide doesn't depend on the person realizing it.
 
I've used both. ForeFlight used to be leaps and bounds above Garmin P, but with the latest updates they are about on par with each other feature-wise. I recommend getting the free trials and running them side-by-side to make your final choice.

I've been using Fltplan Go, and I still haven't been able to convince myself to pay for a ForeFlight subscription. A lot of people seem to use it, but I don't know why people just don't use Fltplan Go. It's free! I know it doesn't do a very limited number of things, but it has most of the features the paid apps have.
 
I've used Fltplan GO for months on simple VFR flights. This weekend, however, an update broke some functionality with the chart/procedure/afd downloads and so I've loaded up Garmin Pilot on my Android phone for the 30 day trial. The difference in quality between the freeware Fltplan app and the payware Garmin app are already hugely noticeable. I'll be making a trip this week utilizing Garmin's app and I'll see if I think it's worth the subscription.
 
From this thread, Garmin pilot must have come a long way. Used to be all I heard about it was that it was buggy and inferior to foreflight.

That was my thought. Actually, and this is going to sound like heresy, while I'm still "loyal" to ForeFlight, I have to say that even Jepp FD, while it has warts, is actually pretty darn ok. I feel pretty at home with it...

(Not enough to pay for it myself, mind you, but my 30-day trial is still working for some reason, so... ;)

ForeFlight and Fltplan are not even in the same ballpark.

I downloaded trials for Garmin Pilot and ForeFlight, and you were right. I still think Fltplan Go is on track to be an excellent app, but these paid ones are better. I like the VFR view from Garmin Pilot, but it seems like everyone uses ForeFlight (including at my flight school), so I'll probably get that.
