Garmin G500

Anybody ever flown with one of these? I'm taking up a new Warrior next week with one installed with two G430's slaved to it. If you have flown with one, how was the learning curve with operating it? I've never flown anything with a glass cockpit so I've been itching to try it out. Thanks!

I fly a Bonanza BE36 with dual 430's and a G500. The day I picked it up from the avionics shop was the first day I flew a G500 aircraft, but I had 15 hours of G1000 time and a few hundred with 430's. If you have Garmin glass experience, the G500 is a very similar. If I were you, I would download the G500/600 simulator from Garmin. This will only help with the interface between the 430's and the G500 and getting an idea of what all the buttons on the G500 due. You don't want to have to think about which button you need to push in order to change the altimeter setting, and this is the purpose of the sim. Flying glass as a private ASEL won't take too long to get use to. You are suppose to be looking outside the whole time anyway. (RIGHT!) I won't comment on whether to do your instrument with glass or round dials, I'm sure there has been plenty of discussion already on that topic.

We just got the G600s installed in our fleet. They are very nice and handy! I have plenty of G1000 time so the transition was pretty easy. But if you've never flown glass, it'll be a little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, you'll find out how simplistic everything becomes. I definitely recommend downloading the sim from the garmin website to get used to where everything is at.

Just remember.. the G500, I assume is just like our 600, is slaved TO the 530/430.. NOT the other way around. You'll have your moving map and flight plan page and what not on the 500, but you have to enter in the information into the 430 first.

I've been fiddling with the simulator, this thing is pretty easy and straight-forward. Thanks for the help!

I'll have a pilot report on the Aspen PFD1000 here in another month or so, if you're interested in the competing product and can wait on that.

I've got a little time with the Aspen recently and it’s good. Sometimes it seems to be not as intuitive as a Garmin product but that’s probably just because I haven’t used it as much. The only garbage that Garmin put out was the GPS500W which is what I thought you guys were talking about at first. What a swing and a miss that thing was.

Care to expand on that? What exactly is wrong with it?

You got me. That was an exaggeration but it just wasn't my preference. It is capable equipment but doesn't seem like the same logic as some of their other products.

It is a 530 with out the nav/com. Pretty much an awesome piece if that is what your panel needs. I find that some people that use this stuff do not know how to *really* use it, and leave many functions on the table. Knowledge is power.

Maybe you mean the GNS480? The 500 operates just like a 530 except no radio functions. The 480 on the other hand is a completely differen't beast.

uh wut?
The G500 is a glass cockpit system comprised of a 2-screen MFD/PFD unit, an AHRS, an ADC, and navigational information fed by a 430 or a 530.

They're talking about the GPS500 which is a 530 with no nav/comm. G500 is a PFD/MFD. GNS480 is the old Apollo CNX480
