G1000 magnetometer

I fired up the G1000 today and was getting ready to shoot some approaches in IMC and noticed a red X over the heading part of the magnetometer. This happened once before and I just recycled the system and it worked. This time that didn't work. Anyone ever had this problem before?

I've seen that and the AHRS get confused on the ground near large metal hangars. Sometimes intermittant problems like this with G1k components are cannon plugs not connected well. I've seen loose pins inside cannon plugs as well.

+1

The metal hanger is a big one and lose connectors are always a possibility as well. There isn't much else that I can think of...

I've seen that on the ground with the metal, but in flight it was the component.

FWIW, I doube it would be the AHARS unless the AI function was X'ed also.

Correct. If this happens and you can't correct the error your AFCS will also fail its diagnostics since it can't get anything out of the AHRS. The best bet in a situation like this is to taxi clear of the metal hangar, shut everything off and bring it up from scratch again. I've noticed that if you taxi clear and the AHRS does indeed come up sometimes the AFCS won't come on line unless you shut everything down and reboot the whole system cold.
