G1000 Database Currency

Does anyone know if the G1000 database (as indicated on the MFD during start) has to be up to date for both IFR and VFR? The rumor is that it only has to be current for IFR however, I cant find any references supporting that idea.

It is perfectly legal to fly a G1000 equipped aircraft VFR AND IFR with an expired database. You just can't use the GPS for navigation or approaches. In other words, the airplane can only be filed as a /U aircraft - no longer /G and now you are limited to ILS, VOR, and LOC approaches.

I understand that is every 28 days, but if you take a look at NACO charts, they list a time at which they expire. I'm willing to bet the navigation database would be the same time, but I wanted to know for sure.
that is correct, same cycle, which just ended on the 12th I think

Using expired databases

A GPS with an expired database may be used for enroute and terminal operations, but only if the pilot has current charts with which to verify that the database information is still correct.

...from the AOPA ASF which supports the AIM, 1-1-19E.
