I think they should put winglets on the MD-80. It would make it more fuel efficient and give it a new lease on life.
You need to apologize to this airplane.Right, but we we're talking about the MD-80s here... DC-9s I think have been well established in their fading trend. MD-80s are still out there in large numbers. Especially when you compare DC-9's Passenger:Freight ratio and MD-80's Passenger:Frieght ratio. A lot more MD-80s are still passenger planes right now.

Do you have professional credibility to back up your accusation? OBTW, you are INCORRECT. The reasons for Airborne's downfall are many, but the DC-9 was definitely NOT one of them. And before someone asks, I've BTDT.
BTW: I did not suggest it was the downfall of Airborne, I merely postulate (reasons above) that it was a BFI.Do you have professional credibility to back up your accusation? OBTW, you are INCORRECT. Wow, I'm hurt. I love the DC-9 that's like my favorite airplane. But the title of this thread clearly said "Future of the MD-80" not "Future of the DC-9," I've read many of those threads. The MD-80 was built in the 1980s as a revamped version of the DC-9, and it has a distinctly different time frame from the Diesel 9s.
Also, in other news, I heard that Ameriflight was going to buying Delta's remaining DC-9's, but only if they can take out what's left of the autopilot and convince the FAA to let them fly it single pilot.
Yea I suppose... FedEx Canada (Morningstar Aviation) is now in the slow process of switching to 757's, but we still have nightly 727 ops from CargoJet (Yes thats the creative airline name) and Kelowna Flightcraft, who operate for Purolator. In the last few weeks we've been at Winnipeg, Edmonton, Kelowna and now I sit at Bob Quinn.
I've never seen so many Convairs, Metros and 727's!
Technically, kind of the same airplanes.
I don't have a MD-88 type, I have a DC-9 type.
A lot of the MD-88's Delta flies are DC-9-82's that have been retrofitted with glass. Unless you've got quite a bit of experience with them, telling a -82 apart from a standard MD-88 is tremendously difficult. -90's are simple because of the "rakish" tail, the big IAE-2500 engines and the VSCF scoops on the right fuselage.
I'm a MD nerd so I can go on for hours on the subject.
The 717's are just a DC-9 as well, hopefully without the putrid scent of ATN_Pilot's bootie.![]()
I'm kind of curious though, does your type carry across all the different 80 series or is it strictly 88 due to the different avionics?
That's awesome! Not to sound like a kid in the candy store, but the DC-9 series from the very first all the way up to the 717 have fascinated me. I am aware that the MD-80 series are actually DC-9-80 types and there is no DC-9-80. Just the 81 82 83 87, and 88, and the 87 is the only one where you can really tell a difference externally.

Jesus, look at this awful picture! Look at it!No restriction. Just says good old DC-9. View attachment 23675
Grats on the English proficient. Hard check ride?No restriction. Just says good old DC-9. View attachment 23675
I think that is a funny restriction. Don't you have to circle in VMC? I had one on my ATR-72 type but they had us go back again and get new types without the restrictions.757/767 circling restriction? n00b!
