Future of the Airlines

Aviation is one of those businesses where there's rarely pressure to raise rates to match waning interest in hard work at low pay.

They'll cut minimums and the resumes will come rolling in once again.

I agree. They always have. Heck, not too long ago you could get on with a major with under 1000hrs.

Crossposting from an internal union forum to a public website is very bad form, however I stand by my statement.

VERY bad form...esp when it's from an "internal" forum that's literally not supposed to be seen by the public.

In the 30 years I've been in I've never seen waning interest. I've always been curious about when that's going to happen. I still run into young people that want to fly no matter what.

That makes it even more important that ALPA navigate the shoals very carefully now to be around for the deep water later.

It's kind of like when Al Haynes and the guys in UAL 232 lost all their hydraulics. There was no question it was going to be a bad landing. The question was could it be at all survivable?

I agree with you.

There will always be interest from young people to become pilots. However for the pilots that are all ready flying at the regional level that have a family and a mortgage, if they don't see any upward movement in the near future where they can earn a decent salary, they will either fight for better wages or just quit the industry all together.

Well, it's not really against the rules, but generally speaking, it's fairly customary to ask a poster (on a non-public internal forum) for permission to crosspost on a public forum.

Kind of like moderator crossposting something said in the "Moderator's-Only" forum (that's *IF* one actually exists,

) and delivering it to "General Topics" or the "Lavatory".

Not exactly against the terms and conditions of the website, but bad form.

True. That's the reason scope was such a bad idea and may be the undoing of ALPA. At some point the guys at the regionals may decide that voluntarily forgoing bigger equipment is not in their (read family and mortgage) best interest.

This will be tricky, getting through the next few years and still having a national union to pick up the pieces on the other side.

Wow! If I revealed something Doug would rather not have, I apologize. I didn't see any potentially implicating statements in Dougs post on the other forum. Just trying to add to the discussion.

Now, had I revealed something inappropriate, I would understand. As far as I am concerned, if you make statement with your real name signed to them in a quazi-public forum, you do not expect that information to remain anonymous. BTW, the forums in question are the ALPA National Boards. They are viewable by THOUSANDS of members and even some non-members. In fact, item 6 of the ALPA Terms and Conditions states, "6. Information that is posted on ALPA Message Bulletin Boards is not secure, and may be viewed by persons who are not ALPA members."

So, while I respect anyone's opinion to the contrary, I don't think the post was "bad form." Had I changed it to ALL CAPS, then maybe

Considering it was from a totally different conversation, it's a little awkward to have posts jump forums because then I've got to jump back to the other board and look at the context.

Like if I said "Jon Mickley is a NASCAR freak!", in jest, on the Delta ALPA forums, but then Flyover clipped and pasted that statement into a different discussion without the whole thread as context, something gets lost in translation.

In the future, if you've got issue with something I post on another forum, address it there or say "Hey, lemme drag this from ALPA to something more public like JC" as a basic courtesy.

Here, I'm "Doug Taylor" and you're "JAM" so you have a certain amount of anonymity enjoyed on jetcareers. I have no idea what your actual name is so going from an internal website without the luxury of psuedonyms into a more publicly viewable forum where only one of us enjoys that anonymity is bad form.

Given the reality of the industry right now, as far as I'm concerm Scope Clause are already obsolete.

I think I understand where you are coming from, Doug. To be clear, I had no "issue" with what you were saying, just trying to add my experience to what you had said. It is enough for me that you would rather I not re-post your words without your permission, so I won't. Well, gotta go start a 4-day. Hope you have a relaxing weekend
