If one is furloughed, when you are eventually hired again, do you have to start from the bottom again or do you get your old position? Or does it depend on a lot of factors.

I assume you mean recalled.

When you are recalled you assume your old position, which is of course on the bottom, since they furlough from the bottom

If you go to another airline you start at the bottom again. Another great advantage unions have gotten us.... NOT!

So, is there really an advantage to going back to that same airline if one could be hired by another one sooner.

Pretty much almost where you left off as per your date of hire.

Me likey seniority system, btw!

It all depends and you'll never really know the 'right answer' until you're 59 years and 11 months old!

We've got some guys that were USAir furloughs back in the 1980's that are Delta 757/767 captains currently, whereas the guys that hung around to get recalled in the 1980's just ended up being re-furloughed after 9/11.

Some guys gave up their Delta seniority number to go to Federal Express in the early 1990's that are doing well.

It really all depends. And the worst part, is that it's mostly a roll of the dice!

Even crazier is if you look at Pan Am. If you were a A310 or 727 pilot, you got snapped up in the Delta/Pan Am/JFK Operations acquisition. If you were a 747 pilot, you went to United as part of the Pacific Route acquisition and everyone else ended up on the street, I think.

Ya never know.

I would like it if there was a national seniority list.

Would settle a lot of fights.

In terms of bidding rights or in terms of placement during mergers?

If it's for bidding rights, I'd be on furlough because there'd be a lot of 16-year seniority guys transitioning over to Delta, then I'd probably go displace someone junior to me at another airline so I can pay the rent.

But if it's for mergers or acquisitions, I think we'll be best served by sending up the "Batman" light beam and summoning Bob Beziat, who's currently a Delta captain...err. FO now and was part of the Pan Am European/Shuttle acquisition in the 1990's.

I've read many of your post and I have one question!

Is there anything you aren't bitter about?

Look at your name!
Who's bitter?

Hey look - I wasted 15 years of my life pursuing the "airline pilot dream."
It wasn't what I thought. I got furloughed and I am now on "the bottom" again. Many people told me "run your own business, then you are the boss." Looking back, they were and still are 100% correct.

Doug, on the national seniority issue, yes I would like to see it for bidding and displacement, yeah you would be out of your job right now but you are in fact junior (nationally) to those who are on the street currently. It would suck to be young and junior but that of course that changes with time. On the other hand, once you got some national seniority you could actually have some security. You wouldn't have to worry about your airline going bust for example.

I don't know why I'm talking about it, of course it would never happen.

The name is meant to be sarcastic!

Your opinion was that we are all Liberal Communist Pilot wannabe's so why are you here?

It seems obvious to me you are trying to draw people over to your site so you can make a few bucks.

My opinion is you are a Right Wing Socialist, crybaby, momma’s boy who has had his silver spoon taken away. You don't like the hand you were dealt and you want to reshuffle the deck, well it’s too bad that’s life.

I agree with you on one thing it is an "airline pilot dream." Sometimes it comes true and sometime it doesn't.

Some of us keep dreaming, others bitch and whine. Is that what we could expect at one of your seminars, a full day of your sorrow and the separation of $150 buck from my wallet?

I get that from you here for free, Thanks for the discount.

Reason 12,435 why the union worker mentality sucks.

If Joe Schmoe joins the fledgling airline and puts up with the bottom of the barrel long hours low pay so that after ten years of work someone who has.

(pay attention here)

someone who has

NEVER WORKED FOR THAT COMPANY can walk in and say "So sad too bad move over, I have your job now..

What total BS.

job security
job security
job security.

it's f....ing communisim

Yeah job security for YOU screw the other guy.

Tough nuts if you pick the wrong company to work for.

We all make choices.

By the sounds of it you would walk over the pile of WORKING pilots if it put you back in the front seat of an aiplane.

This must be the brotherhood of the union I hear so much about

I prefer to hear the bad along with the good. I don't know whether Mr. Tenney is overstating the bad stuff or not, but at least he's not blowing smoke up our butts like a lot of the academy sales literature.

It's one pro pilot's opinion - take it or leave it, but easy on the personal attacks, please.

Its not a personal attack.

It is my opinion! Thats all! Nothing more nothing less.

I have a great respect for the man and all he has accomplished. I enjoy his insight as much as you.

I just choose to disagree with him.
