Furlough

Found out today... if I would have stayed at Chicago Express, I would be furloughed. Looks like they are furloughing half of their pilots in two months. Unless things change dramatically with the ATA business plan.

Oh that sucks! ....and I know how that feels. (Luckly I had a job to fall back on.) Hopefully as soon as ATA announced their grumblings many sent out their resumes.

My old flight instructor started there in August. I hope he finds a new & better gig soon.

Mine? Nope.

I just talked to him last week, he's going to go back to his old freight company. Between that & the money he makes playing poker, he'll be fine. (Actually, he makes more playing poker than he ever did flying.)

Independence Air Preferential Hiring

Recently, Independence Airlines (formerly Atlantic Coast Airlines) announced the furlough of over 500 pilots. That reaches back to pilots hired in June 2000. In light of this unfortunate news, XJT ALPA approached management about the possibility of a preferential hiring or interview process for the affected pilots. ExpressJet has agreed to a streamlined interview process and is excited about hiring as many of these pilots as possible. XJT ALPA appreciates managements actions on this issue and special thanks go to VP of Flight Operations & Maintenance Jim Nides, Senior Director of Flight Operations George Semak and Senior Director of Flight Standards & Training Greg Wooley for agreeing to create this special interview process. If any of our pilots have friends over at Independence who might be interested in this process, please show them the following Independence ALPA communication message pasted below:

Attention ACO Pilots: Job Opportunity!

The ACO MEC has just found out that ExpressJet Airlines will be conducting on-site pilot interviews near Dulles Airport in early February (times will be announced shortly). Please visit www.expressjet.com and go to Job Opportunities and then to the Furloughed Pilots link and carefully follow the instructions if you are interested.

ExpressJet management has requested a list of pilots that are
interested in flight officer positions. In addition to visiting ExpressJets website above, please e-mail your name and contact information to our Independence Air Membership Chairman, Alistair Stanton at acomembership@alpa.org. Class dates could be as early as late February 2005.

The ACO MEC would like to impress upon all applicants that if an offer is made by ExpressJet and accepted by a pilot, that every effort be made not to "No Show" the awarded class date. This type of unprofessional action would most likely ruin this excellent opportunity for future Independence pilots.

That's great that XJT is doing this, plus it gives them some experienced turbine pilots to fill their seats.

Well, they have to go somewhere. Might as well be a growing airline. According to XJT's annual reports, they're looking to order at least another 21 XRJs this year. Add that in to any attrition from captains moving on to bigger and better things, and it's not all bad. Besides, just because 500 got furloughed doesn't mean all 500 are going to interview with XJT. The bases might not be a good fit for their family arrangements, or they might just be over the whole airline industry altogether. I sure wouldn't blame them for going after a corporate gig if they've got the experience to do it.

Re: More Furloughs....

actually just talked to a friend who is an intern in Newark, and they raised the minimum up to 1000/200. Good news is they didn't raise the intern minimum of 500/100. So that makes doing an intership at expressjet more desireable.

Re: More Furloughs....

phew...glad I got in when I did. I may be off reserve before I get 1000 hours total time......

Good to see we're helping out the Indy guys, although I'm sure it will still suck to go the bottom of another seniority list.

Ah, well. As a former employee I'm still sending in my resume when I get 600/100......

Re: More Furloughs....

even if your an employee i think you can apply with 500/100 as you are considered internal.

Yeah, but I'm a FORMER employee as of last Tues. I wish I could've stayed with XJT, but it's a long commute between MEM and school in ORL.
